The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Materla decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Pierce is trying to control but Materla manages to pass to mount!
Materla content just to control the position here.
Materla seems to be looking to move to his opponent's back but Pierce is holding on tight.
Pierce looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Materla controls the position.
Pierce just trying to survive but Materla is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Pierce rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Materla missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Materla in particular looking to stall.
Pierce flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Well, if Materla is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Materla wants to free his trapped foot but Pierce is holding on for dear life with his legs.

Pierce is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Materla pulls his head out easily.

Materla is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Materla is looking to take a break and control but Pierce is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Materla connects with a nice short shot to Pierce's temple.

Pierce tries to roll over but Materla keeps him under control.

Pierce is looking for a sweep. Materla is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Materla is taking a breather. Pierce says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Michal Materla hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Materla misses with a body punch
and Pierce counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Materla shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pierce napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Pierce is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Materla stands up and beckons Pierce to his feet.
Materla tries to clinch there but Pierce circles away.
Pierce circles away from the clinch attempt.

Materla drives through with a takedown into guard.

Pierce is working an open guard so Materla takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Materla looks gassed!
Pierce fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Materla looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Nathan Pierce is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Materla tries to clinch up but Pierce circles away and keeps his distance.

Pierce lands a jab to Materla 's midsection.
Materla takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Pierce avoids a kick to the body.

Materla walks into a stiff left hand from Pierce.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Materla changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Pierce tries to avoid it but Materla manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Pierce to the ground. Pierce escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Pierce throws a shot from downtown. Materla moves away and avoids it.
Materla tries to clinch but Pierce moves out of range.
Pierce circles away from the clinch attempt.
Pierce lands a jab to Materla 's midsection.
Pierce fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Materla looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Materla throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean.
Michal Materla seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pierce lands with a cross.
Pierce moving in and out of range nicely, whilst landing the scoring shot.
Materla is breathing heavily.
Materla throws a lazy uppercut
and Pierce counters with a left and a right that stings Materla .
Pierce catches Materla with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong!

Materla takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.

It looks like Michal Materla has been cut.
Pierce lands a body shot.
Materla takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Pierce connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Pierce stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Pierce lands an overhand right.
Pierce lands a nice shot to the body.
Materla takes a body punch but keeps moving.
Pierce uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Pierce throws a combination. Materla tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Pierce comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Materla walks into a stiff left hand from Pierce.
Nice straight punches there by Pierce. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Pierce.
Nathan Pierce is winning the standup battle so far.
Pierce lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Pierce fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Materla on the side of the head.

Materla is rocked!
Materla looks for a takedown but Pierce sprawls well.
Materla gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Pierce.
Materla is still on wobbly legs! Can Pierce finish him?
Pierce swats away the attempt to clinch by Materla .
Materla seems to have recovered his senses.
Pierce lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.

Materla has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Materla there as he acknowledges the shot.
Pierce lands with a cross.
Pierce throws an overhand right from the outside, which connects and sends Materla stumbling backwards into the cage! Materla bounces back off the cage towards Pierce, who cracks him with a two punch combination that drops him to his knees! Pierce lands two more shots before the referee has chance to intervene - what a finish! Pierce celebrates with his corner as the crowd cheer loudly.
