Emelianenko kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Enea Vollare Mezzo. Staley has chosen Alice in Chains - No Excuses as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big right from Emelianenko misses.
Emelianenko throws a series of punches but Staley moves out of range.
Emelianenko swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Emelianenko lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Emelianenko stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

It looks like Layne Staley has been cut.
Staley lands with a cross.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Emelianenko uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Staley.

Emelianenko is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Staley defends well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Emelianenko has one foot on Staley's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Staley lands a leg kick that knocks Emelianenko off balance momentarily.
Emelianenko scores with a sloppy right hand. Staley should have avoided that one.

and Staley makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Emelianenko takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch.
Staley bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Emelianenko's head backwards.

Staley misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Emelianenko is looking for a sweep.
Staley trying to control the position but Emelianenko is working away.
Emelianenko tries to improve position but can't.
Staley is putting a hurting on Emelianenko here, landing some big shots from side control.
Staley cracks Emelianenko with a big right hand but Emelianenko just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.

Staley advances nicely into full mount.
Emelianenko wants to control but Staley is having none of it.
