PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between jordy velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and tristan duran (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, jordy velasquez!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, tristan duran!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
duran gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and velasquez cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

and duran counters with a nice double leg into side control. velasquez won't be happy with that.
velasquez could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
duran wants to control for a moment but velasquez uses the opportunity to move back to half guard.

velasquez is doing well to control the position and prevent duran from advancing to side control.
velasquez is looking to improve his position.
velasquez wants to control but duran is keeping busy and won't allow it.
duran perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
velasquez on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if velasquez tries to get out of the position.
velasquez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

We're going to have a standup here because jordy velasquez wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

duran is working velasquez over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
duran trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as duran accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
velasquez is breathing heavily.
duran slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

duran is working velasquez over with some ground and pound from side control.

duran misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

duran tries to move to mount but velasquez blocks the move with his legs.
velasquez is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
duran advances to mount.
velasquez knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for duran on the ground.

duran cracks velasquez with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.

duran landing strikes from the mount and velasquez is in trouble!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
duran trying to control but he's not successful this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
duran lands with some vicious ground and pound - can velasquez hang on?
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



duran decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
duran works his way into side control.
velasquez wants to control but duran postures up.

duran thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
duran wants to lay and pray for a moment but velasquez keeps working.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
velasquez is looking to reverse the position.

duran working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
velasquez is pushing duran's head away, looking to escape. duran manages to hold on to the position though.
velasquez tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but duran wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
duran cracks velasquez with an elbow. That is naaassty.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

duran is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, velasquez has escaped the position, nice work there.

duran is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. velasquez knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
velasquez is looking for a sweep.

duran is looking to take a break and control but velasquez is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
velasquez takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
duran has knee on belly and moves into mount.
duran has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
velasquez really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
duran can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as velasquez is looking to escape.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

duran quickly switches position and commits to an armbar! It's a big risk for duran but it's paid off an velasquez is forced to tap! Nice work by duran.
