The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rua shoots in and bounces Materla off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Materla is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rua trying to control but Materla is working from the bottom.
Rua is looking to stand up but Materla won't let him.
Materla looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Materla throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Materla has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Rua stands up from Materla's guard - Rua perhaps looking for a knockout.
Materla gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Rua counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Rua is posturing up here but Materla has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Rua tries to roll out but it's too tight and Rua has to tap! Slick submission there by Materla!
