The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Valquez throws out a leg kick but Gusi moves out of range and Valquez only half commits.
Valquez throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Gusi ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

and Valquez counters with a three punch combo that has Gusi backing up. Gusi nods at Valquez to acknowledge the strikes.

Valquez looks to land a left hand but Gusi moved out of range nicely.

and Gusi counters with a nice double leg into side control. Valquez won't be happy with that.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Gusi wants to control but Valquez is keeping him busy.

Gusi is trying to get an arm triangle but Valquez is defending well.

Valquez pushes Gusi off looking to stand but Gusi dives back in and keeps control.
Gusi seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Valquez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Gusi looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Valquez with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gusi works his foot free and advances to mount.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Valquez is squirming around, avoiding Gusi's attempts to control the action.
