PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rick Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kevin Conlin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johnson's entrance music is my sacrifice by creed. A fine choice. Conlin has chosen Eminem The Way I Am as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Rick Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Kevin Conlin!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Daniel Bishop and James Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson has his takedown stuffed
and Conlin counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.


It looks like Rick Johnson has been cut.
A punch combination from Johnson misses.
Conlin swinging wildly here.
Johnson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Johnson throws an off balance right hand
and Conlin connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Conlin scores with a nice strike.
Conlin stalks Johnson and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Johnson's face. Johnson staggers backwards, shaken.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Conlin makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Johnson is breathing heavily.
No joy there for Conlin, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Johnson takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
Conlin misses with a wild combination.

Conlin throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Johnson tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Conlin is in Johnson's guard.

Conlin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Conlin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Johnson can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Conlin controls the pace.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Conlin working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Conlin is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Johnson keeping moving, preventing Conlin from controlling successfully.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Conlin's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Conlin got a little sloppy there for a moment and Johnson has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Conlin has managed to get both his arms back between Johnson's legs - danger averted.

Conlin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Kevin Conlin wasn't active enough on the ground.
Johnson throws a looping overhand right but Conlin ducks down to avoid it.
Johnson tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Conlin was well out of range. Poor timing from Johnson.
Conlin swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Conlin takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Conlin fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Johnson manages to avoid it.
Johnson misses with a few strikes there.
Conlin scores with a punch to the head.


Rick Johnson's cut is getting worse.
Conlin throws a jab but it's blocked by Johnson.
Johnson gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Conlin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Conlin controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Johnson has momentary wrist control but Conlin slips an elbow through the middle.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Johnson looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Conlin has picked Johnson up and slammed him! Johnson can't keep hold of the triangle and Conlin manages to pass to side control!
Johnson is not content to let Conlin control the position.

Conlin remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Kevin Conlin wasn't active enough on the ground.

Conlin shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Conlin was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Johnson tries to reverse the position but Conlin maintains control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Conlin ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

Johnson gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Conlin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Kevin Conlin hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Conlin loads up on a big right hand but Johnson slips the punch.

Conlin lands a left hand that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.
Conlin lands with a short head shot on the inside.


Rick Johnson's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
Conlin lands a body shot.

Conlin lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.
A short body shot lands from Conlin as the two fighters clinch.
Conlin works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Still in the clinch, Conlin scores with a nice short uppercut.
Conlin lands a right hand that snaps the head of Johnson backwards.
A right hook to the body lands for Conlin.

Jeez, Rick Johnson's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
A short body shot lands from Conlin as the two fighters clinch.
Conlin lands a shoulder strike.
Conlin works on Johnson's body with a couple of short punches.

Conlin wants the takedown. Johnson is fighting it off but Conlin persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Johnson's guard against the cage.
Conlin is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Conlin's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Johnson will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kevin Conlin.

and Johnson counters with a nice double leg into half guard.

Johnson drops back, looking for a kneebar! Conlin looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Conlin looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Conlin!

Conlin has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Conlin tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Johnson tries to reverse the position but Conlin maintains control.
Conlin avoids the attempt from Johnson to control.
Conlin controlling the pace for now.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Conlin. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Conlin scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Conlin landing strikes from the mount.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Rick Johnson's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
