PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Hazmat Unit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nate Lavelle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hazmat Unit had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 187.7lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Hazmat Unit had a look across the cage there at his opponent. He definitely means business

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Hazmat Unit!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Nate Lavelle!
The judges for this bout are Vladimir Khabensky, Valeri Chadov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Lavelle enables Unit to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Lavelle manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Lavelle being controlled here, momentarily.
Lavelle wants to stand and escape but Unit is having none of it.
Lavelle is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Unit controls from within his opponent's guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Hazmat Unit.
Lavelle throws a right and a left that Unit avoids nicely.
The fighters circling - Lavelle throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Unit throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Lavelle tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Unit is in Lavelle's guard.
Lavelle wants to stand but Unit is controlling the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Lavelle really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Unit. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Unit is pushing down on Lavelle's leg trying to pass to half guard. Lavelle is fighting to maintain full guard but Unit has managed to sneak the leg through.
Unit passes to full mount!
Unit content just to control the position here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Lavelle is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Unit controlling from mount.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Hazmat Unit just wasn't active enough.
Unit blocks a head kick by Lavelle.
Lavelle throws a head kick that misses.

Unit shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Lavelle's guard.
Unit passes Lavelle's left leg - he's now in half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Unit works his foot free and advances to mount.
Unit controlling the pace for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Lavelle's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
Unit tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Unit is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Lavelle throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
A head kick by Lavelle misses

and Unit counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Lavelle wants to get back to his feet.
Lavelle looks gassed!
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Lavelle can do anything to dispel that myth.
Lavelle pushes Unit off but Unit dives into side control.
Lavelle pushes Unit away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Unit gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Unit is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Lavelle looks calm but he's in trouble here. Unit gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Lavelle is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Unit lets go of the hold and Lavelle can pop his arm back in it's socket.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Hazmat Unit!
