PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rodrigo Jones (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carson Patrick (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Carson Patrick will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rodrigo Jones!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Carson Patrick!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Patrick throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Jones sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Patrick thows a body shot but no joy.
Patrick throws a series of punches but Jones avoids them all with ease.
Jones blocks a jab.

Jones bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Jones tries to score with some ground and pound. Patrick controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Patrick wants to control but Jones postures up.

Jones wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Patrick, who protects the arm well.
Jones trying to control the action but Patrick is working from the bottom.
Jones tries to advance to mount but Patrick denies him.
Jones will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Jones is looking to take a break and control but Patrick is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Patrick is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Patrick throws a push kick but Jones slaps the foot to one side.
Patrick misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
A punch combination from Patrick misses.
A solid leg kick lands there for Patrick.
Patrick pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Patrick throws a head kick but Jones moves out of range.

Jones feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Jones loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Patrick closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.

Patrick kicks Jones off and gets back to his feet.
Patrick misses with a series of wild punches.
Patrick misses with a head kick.
Jones moves out of range of the body kick from Patrick.
Patrick throws a head kick but Jones moves out of range.
Jones slips a jab and a cross from Patrick.
Patrick throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Patrick tries a head kick but it misses.

Patrick gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Jones loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Patrick misses with a lunging right hand
and Jones counters with a nice kick to the body.
Jones throws a leg kick which misses Patrick's front leg but catches the back leg as Patrick tries to avoid it.
Carson Patrick seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Jones drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Jones lands a few punches from side control.
Patrick parries the strikes from Jones easily there. Jones is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Patrick to escape.
Patrick is pushing Jones's head away, looking to escape. Jones manages to hold on to the position though.

Jones fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Jones moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

Jones postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Patrick misses with the body kick

and Jones counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Jones.
Patrick wants to stand and escape but Jones is having none of it.
Jones has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Patrick is breathing heavily.

Jones seems to be working for a kimura but Patrick defends the submission attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

so Jones counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Patrick keeping moving, preventing Jones from controlling successfully.
Jones wanted to stand there but Patrick had control of the position.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Jones connects with a nice short shot to Patrick's temple.
Jones perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

Patrick takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Jones moves into the clinch successfully.
Jones lands a body shot in the clinch.
Patrick wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
A knee to the head by Jones.
Jones keeps control of Patrick as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Jones ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Jones no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Patrick must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

and Jones counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Jones.

Patrick has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Jones is proving hard to escape from.

Jones is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Well Jones has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
