PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Al Sahab (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Al Sahab!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Carlos King!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Arvi Lind.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

King gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Sahab ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sahab no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Sahab looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sahab lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for King!
Sahab controlling the pace for now.
King holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Sahab tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Sahab throws some wild stikes that King manages to avoid easily.

Sahab is going oldschool here, as he tries to force King to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so King shrugs it off.

Sahab content just to control the position here.
King really wants to buck Sahab off and get back to his feet.
Sahab throwing strikes here but King is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
King is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Sahab takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Sahab lands with some strikes.

King is squirming around, avoiding Sahab's attempts to control the action.
Sahab unloads with some shots from mount but King bucks and avoids them well.
Poor strikes thrown by Sahab there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
King is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

You get the feeling that King really doesn't like being in this position too much.
King really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sahab. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
BOOM! Sahab connects with a massive shot to the dome!
King wants to try and get back to his feet.
Sahab controlling from mount.
King's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.

Sahab trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Sahab looking to ground and pound but King is blocking nicely.
King avoids a series of strikes thrown by Sahab.
Sahab putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sahab wants to control the pace but King is squirming around nicely.
King is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
King in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Al Sahab dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Good exchange - King coming out on top.
King throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Sahab shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
King moves to clinch but Sahab breaks away

and Sahab decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in King's guard.
Sahab loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Sahab prevents King from getting back to his feet.
King is wriggling around but Sahab manages to pass to half guard.
Sahab is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Sahab stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

King avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
King closes the distance looking to clinch

and Sahab counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Sahab trying to control the position from guard on top but King is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

We're going to have a standup here because Al Sahab wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Sahab feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

King is looking to stand up but Sahab isn't so interested in that idea.

King wants to stand and escape but Sahab is having none of it.

Al Sahab has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Sahab gets in close and instigates a clinch.
King is pressed up against the cage. Sahab has hold of a leg and is looking to drag King down to the mat. King avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
A left lands for King.
King tries to close the distance and clinch up but Sahab swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Sahab swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
letting King counter with a right hand.
Carlos King is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
King tries to clinch but Sahab moves out of range.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

King breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
King looks to land a combination but Sahab avoids it well.

and King counters by moving into the clinch.

King's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
King tries to clinch but Sahab moves out of range.
Danga de danga de dang - King scores with a four punch combination!
King slaps away a takedown attempt from Sahab, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Al Sahab. That's going to take a lot out of him.
King tests Sahab's chin there with a solid looking shot.

King closes the distance and clinches.
King is leaning against Sahab and scores with a nice uppercut to the body.
Sahab wants to get back to striking at distance but King won't allow it.
A short right from King on the inside.
King lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sahab looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Sahab wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

King gets through Sahab's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Al Sahab dominated that second round.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!


King tries to clinch but Sahab is having none of it.

and Sahab counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Sahab misses with a takedown attempt - King sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Sahab dives in and grabs King's left leg, looking for a takedown. King pushes down on Sahab's head and hops out.

King forces Sahab back against the cage and clinches.

King breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
King tries to clinch but fails miserably

and Sahab counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
King wants to stand up but Sahab is controlling him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Sahab wants to control from the top but King keeps moving.
Al Sahab overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
King keeping full guard, as Sahab tries to pass.

King explodes and escapes back to his feet! Nice escape there!

King throws a nice looking combination but Sahab bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
King moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
King throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Sahab on the side of the head.
King scores with a nice right hand.
King dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Sahab tries to move into range but King moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand.
King moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Sahab clinches up with King and pushes him back against the cage.
King is trying to break the clinch but Sahab has him pressed against the cage.

Sahab's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
King tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
King stuffs the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Al Sahab. That's going to take a lot out of him.
King wants to clinch but Sahab slips to the side

and Sahab counters with a takedown into side control.
King is not content to let Sahab control the position.
King tries to get back to his feet but has found himself mounted instead. Damn, that's gotta suck.
You get the feeling that King really doesn't like being in this position too much.

Sahab can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as King is looking to escape.
Sahab throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for King because Sahab loaded up on that one.
King really wants to buck Sahab off and get back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sahab looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Carlos King has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Al Sahab is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Sahab can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as King is looking to escape.

And that's the end of the fight!
Al Sahab showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sahab, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
