PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Trent Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tony Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pope comes into the arena with Coming Home ft Skylar Grey blaring out of the sound system. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 16 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Trent Pope!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 21 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tony Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice body kick there by Pope.
Mendez slips a straight right by Pope.

Mendez drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Pope tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mendez tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
You can see the frustration on Pope's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Mendez scoring with punches and elbows.
The strikes coming from Mendez are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
The ground and pound from Mendez seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Pope can't do much from the bottom here.
Mendez is chipping away with strikes.
Mendez tries to move to mount but Pope blocks the move with his legs.
Mendez creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Pope sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Pope manages to get back to half guard.
Pope has his hands clasped together around Mendez's back. He's all about the action.

Pope wants to get back to his feet.
Mendez throwing shots but Pope is blocking nicely.
Mendez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Pope's head.
Pope keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Pope is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mendez's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mendez's back!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Pope doesn't have the hooks in and Mendez manages to turn into his guard.
Mendez throws a big right hand that misses.
Mendez is looking to work some ground and pound but Pope has wrist control.
Mendez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Mendez wants to pass the guard but Pope is keeping the position.
Pope is pulling down on Mendez's head to control his posture.
Mendez trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mendez accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Pope is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Mendez stands up over Pope, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Mendez is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Mendez landing with the ground and pound.

Pope pushes Mendez off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Mendez slips under a jab from Pope.
Mendez fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Pope avoids it really well and circles away.
A nice inside leg kick there by Pope. That's going to slow Mendez down.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pope throws a push kick but Mendez slaps the foot to one side.

Pope darts in and clinches Mendez up against the cage.

Pope breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Pope looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Mendez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Pope misses with a body shot.
Pope throws a looping overhand right but Mendez ducks down to avoid it.
Pope throws a leg kick

so Mendez counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Mendez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Pope is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mendez drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Mendez jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Mendez pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Pope is keeping the position for now.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendez prevents Pope from getting back to his feet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Pope is pulling down on Mendez's head. It's preventing any offense from Mendez, at least for the moment.

We're going to have a standup here because Trent Pope wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Mendez walks forward, straight into a front kick from Pope.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tony Mendez dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Mendez shoots in for a takedown but Pope shows good takedown defense.
Pope stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
An inside leg kick from Pope misses.
Pope swinging wildly here.
Pope thumps Mendez with a low kick.
Pope pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Mendez doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Mendez avoids the body shot from Pope.
Pope looks to land a right hand but Mendez moved out of range.
Trent Pope seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mendez gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Pope.
Pope ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Trent Pope is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Mendez is breathing heavily.
Pope fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Mendez looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Pope is looking to land body kicks.
The fighters circle, before Pope throws a beautiful high kick that crashes into Mendez's neck, sending him stumbling to the floor! Pope lands more strikes and forces a referee stoppage! That one ended in an instant!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:39 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Kick & Punches). Trent Pope!
Trent Pope retains his heavyweight title!
