PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Max Riley (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Elvijs Meisters (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Max Riley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Elvijs Meisters!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and Chris Downing.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meisters throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Meisters gets a clinch.
Meisters is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Nice body punch from Riley - that landed with a thud.
Meisters wants a takedown.
Meisters tries for a takedown. No joy.
Max Riley has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Elvijs Meisters.

Riley has hold of one of Meisters's legs. Meisters is fighting the takedown attempt but Riley gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Riley slips nicely into half guard.
Riley prevents Meisters from standing back up.
Riley wants to pass the guard but Meisters is defending well.
Riley scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Riley passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Meisters!

Riley cracks Meisters with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Meisters looks gassed!
Meisters tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Riley has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Meisters is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.

Riley is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Meisters has managed to escape the submission attempt.

Riley wants to finish this one by submission but Meisters is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Riley.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Meisters flailing away with punches but nothing is landing.
Riley lands a shot to the body, followed up by a shot to the exposed head of his trapped opponent.

Riley has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Meisters's face.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Meisters defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Riley.
Riley lands a big elbow.
Riley landing strikes from the mount and Meisters is in trouble!
A nice elbow there by Riley.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Riley is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Meisters can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Riley lands a big shot there that rocks Meisters but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Max Riley dominated that round.
That's time! Riley's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Riley shoots in looking for a takedown. Meisters tries to sprawl out of it but Riley keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Meisters manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Meisters moves into the clinch successfully.

Meisters has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Riley clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Riley tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Riley tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Meisters throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Riley is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Riley sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Max Riley overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Meisters connects with a nice short shot to Riley's temple.
Riley is trying to stand up here but Meisters is controlling him well.

Meisters not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Riley on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Riley tries to get out of the position.
Meisters thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Riley keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Riley regains full guard. Nicely done.
Riley wants to sweep but no luck.
Meisters scoring with some ground and pound.
Meisters lands a couple of digs.

Meisters must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Riley seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Meisters stopping the sweep attempt from Riley.

Meisters throws a strike but Riley rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Riley scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

Riley postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Meisters wants to stand up but Riley is controlling him.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Riley's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Riley stands up and waves to Meisters to follow him.
Riley fails miserably with a takedown attempt.

Meisters clinches up with Riley and pushes him back against the cage.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Riley ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Riley no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Meisters thows a big elbow that misses.
Riley seems keen to control Meisters's posture.
Meisters chips away with some ground and pound.
Riley pulls Meisters in close to his closed guard and prevents Meisters from doing any damage or advancing position.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

Max Riley has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Meisters rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Riley moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Elvijs Meisters showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.



Meisters forces Riley back against the cage and clinches.
Meisters can't get the takedown.

Riley lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Riley not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Meisters avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Riley.
Meisters is refusing to be controlled, as Riley sits in half guard.
Riley working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Riley is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Meisters is just riding it out for now. Riley eventually gives up the hold.
Riley looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Riley lands with a punch from half guard.
Riley with the ground and pound but Meisters uses the opportunity to regain guard.

Riley decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Meisters, up you get!

and Meisters counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Meisters.

Meisters has picked Riley up - he's going for a ride! Meisters dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Meisters thows a huge punch but Riley dodges it nicely.
Riley moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Meisters is in close to Riley's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Meisters throwing strikes from guard but Riley blocks nicely.
Meisters loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Riley wriggles free and stands up.
Riley shoots and misses
and Meisters counters with a two punch combo.
Max Riley seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Meisters rushes Riley and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Riley gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Riley is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Meisters tries to kick Riley off but Riley keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Riley stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Riley doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Meisters counters with a nice double leg into side control. Riley won't be happy with that.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Max Riley. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Meisters fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Meisters throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Meisters lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face.
Riley tries to bench press Meisters off him but Meisters keeps the position.

Riley is looking to regain half guard here but Meisters keeps moving and retains side control.
Sloppy strikes there by Meisters.
Riley is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Meisters off and has taken his back!

Riley looking for the choke but no joy.

Riley scores with punches and elbows.
Will Riley go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Even with his hooks in, Riley manages to miss with strikes from the back.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Meisters is keeping busy.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Max Riley.
I think Riley has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
