PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Jackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Blair Howatt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mike Jackson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Blair Howatt!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Alexandre Firmino and Mauricio Rocha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jackson takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Howatt darts in and clinches Jackson up against the cage.
Howatt goes for a takedown in the clinch but Jackson prevents it.
Howatt wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Jackson has him pressed against the cage.

Jackson drags the fight down to the ground.
Howatt looking to sit in guard and control but Jackson gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Howatt looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Jackson wants to control from the top but Howatt keeps moving.
Howatt trying to keep a closed guard but Jackson is proving a slippery customer.

Howatt looking for a guillotine here but Jackson defends easily.

Howatt is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Howatt wants to get back to his feet but Jackson is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Jackson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Howatt, up you get!

Jackson gets a takedown into half guard.
Jackson tries to pass the half guard into mount. Howatt knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Jackson gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.

Jackson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Jackson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Howatt's guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Jackson postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Jackson stops Howatt from standing up.
Jackson is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Howatt throws his legs up looking for a submission but Jackson uses it to pass to side control.
Howatt is looking to regain half guard here but Jackson keeps moving and retains side control.
Howatt manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Jackson is trying to get back to full guard.
Howatt throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Howatt rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Jackson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

It looks like Mike Jackson has been cut.

Howatt tries to keep at a distance but Jackson has taken the fight into the clinch.

Jackson stops Howatt from getting back to his feet.
Howatt is breathing heavily.
Howatt is staying active underneath Jackson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Howatt fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Jackson tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Howatt prevents Jackson from breaking the clinch.
Jackson throws an elbow that misses.
Howatt wants to break free but Jackson has control.

Howatt wants to improve his position but Jackson is controlling well.
Jackson seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Jackson uses his free foot to push down on Howatt's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Howatt.
Jackson can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Howatt is looking to escape.
Howatt is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Jackson's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Jackson lands a nice shot to the head.
Howatt is squirming around, avoiding Jackson's attempts to control the action.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Howatt slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Jackson feints and as Howatt raises his hands in defense, Jackson changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Jackson wants to control from the top but Howatt keeps moving.
Howatt is trying to hold Jackson in close to prevent damage but Jackson has managed to pass into half guard.
Jackson wants to pass the guard but Howatt is defending well.
Howatt is trying to stand.

Howatt wants to get back to full guard.
Howatt wants to stand back up but Jackson manages to pass into side control.
Howatt takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

The fight stays on the outside here - Jackson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Jackson darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Jackson is pressing down on Howatt's thigh, looking to free his foot. Howatt is holding on for now.
Jackson tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

Jackson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Howatt is just riding it out for now. Jackson eventually gives up the hold.
Howatt wants to control but Jackson is keeping busy.

Horrible takedown by Howatt or perhaps it was just good defense by Jackson which made him look bad.

Howatt is looking to sinch up a triangle. Jackson throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Howatt's body to avoid the submission. Howatt has instead reached around Jackson's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Howatt arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
