PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kenneth Mensah (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and BJ Nori (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mensah comes to the cage accompanied by Pour Some Sugar On Me. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kenneth Mensah!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, BJ Nori!
The judges for this bout are Paul Aken, Paulsen Ambrosius and Saam Ante.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nori fails with the takedown
letting Mensah counter with a right hand.

Nori closes the distance and clinches.
Nori avoids the elbow strike from Mensah, against the cage.
Nori landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Nori keeps control of Mensah as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Nori has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Mensah is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Mensah pulls guard.
Nori chips away with some ground and pound.
Mensah wants to sweep here but Nori controlling him for the moment.
Mensah knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Nori on the ground.
Nori passes into half guard.
Mensah gets full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nori in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Mensah is striking but Nori is not phased and passes to half guard.
The fighters are battling for position here. Mensah manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

Nori has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Nori wants to control from the top but Mensah keeps moving.
Mensah has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Nori has passed into side control.
Nori wants to stand but Mensah has his arm trapped.

Nori wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mensah, who protects the arm well.

Mensah is refusing to be controlled, as Nori sits in half guard.
Mensah is looking for a sweep. Nori is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Mensah moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Mensah is working an open guard so Nori takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

and Nori counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Mensah lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
A head kick misses from Mensah.
Nori keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Mensah.

letting Mensah counter with a right hand.
Kenneth Mensah has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of BJ Nori.
Nori moves away from the strike by Mensah.

Mensah shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Mensah showed some decent athleticism there.
Nori wants to control but Mensah is keeping busy.

Mensah working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Nori trying to hold on to Mensah's head to control him but Mensah postures up.
Mensah landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.
Mensah seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Nori does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Mensah working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Mensah is trying to control the action in half guard but Nori is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Mensah slips a nice elbow through Nori's hands, connecting with Nori's forehead.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Nori tries to roll over but Mensah keeps him under control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Nori is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Mensah scores with a couple of nice shots.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kenneth Mensah dominated that round.
That's time! Mensah's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Mensah lands with a straight right. Nori didn't see that one coming.
Mensah swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Kenneth Mensah seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mensah throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Mensah misses with a hook
and Nori counters with a body kick.
Nori shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Mensah as he jumps to the side.
Nori tries to close the distance and clinch but Mensah swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Mensah shoots in and bounces Nori off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Mensah works over Nori with some ground and pound from guard.
Mensah is looking to work some ground and pound but Nori has wrist control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Mensah has gone for a leg lock! Nori slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mensah's guard.

Nori trying to control the position from guard on top but Mensah is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Mensah is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Mensah is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Mensah looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Nori with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Mensah throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Nori wants to control but Mensah is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Mensah lands strikes from half guard.
Nori makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Nori.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Mensah's corner. There ya go! There ya go!

Mensah keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Nori's head.
Nori has momentary wrist control but Mensah slips an elbow through the middle.

Kenneth Mensah overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Mensah throws a combination. Nori tries to block but a couple of punches get through.

Kenneth Mensah is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Nori fails with an attempt to clinch.

Nori shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mensah napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Nori has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Mensah!

Mensah on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Mensah tries to get out of the position.

Nori tries to pass the half guard into mount. Mensah knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Mensah is working hard here to advance position.
Nori wants to stand up but Mensah is controlling the position.
Nori uses his free foot to push down on Mensah's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Mensah.

Mensah is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Nori can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Mensah is looking to escape.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Mensah is desperately trying to improve his position but Nori has a good base and remains in mount.
Nori controlling the pace for now.
Mensah is trying to escape the mount.

Nori has hold of Mensah's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Mensah manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
BJ Nori has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
BJ Nori comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Mensah has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
