The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shimada fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Brannigan manages to avoid it.
Brannigan connects with a leg kick. Shimada looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it.
Brannigan buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.

Shimada fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Brannigan sprawls well initially but Shimada persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Brannigan wants to get back to his feet.

Brannigan makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!
Brannigan swings away with a leg kick that misses.
Shimada looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Brannigan is fending him off so far but Shimada persists. Nope, Brannigan circles away and we're back to standing.
Brannigan is looking to slow Shimada down with leg kicks.
Brannigan throws a sloppy head kick

and Shimada counters with a single leg into guard. Brannigan didn't expect that.

Shimada stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brannigan swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Shimada is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Shimada connects with a nice short shot to Brannigan's temple.

Shimada is trying to control the action in half guard but Brannigan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Shimada is pressing down on Brannigan's thigh, looking to free his foot. Brannigan is holding on for now.
Brannigan pushes Shimada off looking to stand but Shimada dives back in and keeps control.
Brannigan is not content to let Shimada control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brannigan looks like he's trying to stand up.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Shimada is nestled in close to Brannigan, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.
Shimada is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Brannigan is squirming around, avoiding Shimada's attempts to control the action.
Shimada breaks from Brannigan's wrist control and lands an elbow.

Shimada has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Shimada lands a big shot there that rocks Brannigan but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Shimada lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Brannigan hang on?

Brannigan takes a big shot to the dome and his eyes have rolled back in his head! Shimada's killer instinct has kicked in as he finishes the fight with more strikes. Impressive finish.
