PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rolando Paneda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rocky Marciano (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Rolando Paneda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 3 - 1, fighting out of London, Rocky Marciano!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Steven Brown and Chris Edwards.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Marciano misses with a jab to the body
enabling Paneda to counter with a crisp jab.

Paneda shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Marciano keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

Paneda is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Marciano tries to get to full guard but Paneda has control of the leg.
Marciano won't allow Paneda to pass to mount.
Paneda wants to control but Marciano is keeping him busy.
Marciano tries to roll over but Paneda keeps him under control.

Marciano is working an open guard so Paneda takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

and Paneda counters with a two punch combo.
Marciano throws a combination that misses
and Paneda counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Marciano is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Marciano stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Marciano wants it to stay on the feet.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Paneda scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Rocky Marciano seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Paneda misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Paneda uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Marciano.

and Paneda counters by clinching up.

and Paneda makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Marciano really felt that one!

Paneda is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Marciano pulls him back up using the underhooks.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rolando Paneda. That's going to take a lot out of him.

A frustrated look appears on Marciano's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Paneda wants to control from the top but Marciano keeps moving.
Marciano doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Marciano has eaten all the pies!
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Rolando Paneda.

Marciano throws a left and a right that both miss

and Paneda holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Marciano wants to break the clinch but can't.
An uppercut to the body lands inside from Paneda.

Paneda breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Paneda closes this distance looking for a takedown but Marciano circles away.
Marciano lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Paneda circles away quickly and effectively.
Paneda really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

and Paneda counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

and Paneda counters with a nice double leg into side control. Marciano won't be happy with that.
Paneda remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
Marciano is trying to control Paneda's posture but Paneda avoids it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Marciano sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rolando Paneda dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Paneda bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Paneda is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Marciano knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Marciano is trying to buck Paneda off.
Marciano is looking to reverse the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Paneda wants to stand up but Marciano has a hold of him and won't allow it.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Marciano tries to strike from the bottom but it doesn't land.
Paneda is trying to control the action in half guard but Marciano is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Paneda is really struggling to control Marciano but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Marciano is defending against the submission attempts here by Paneda.

Marciano is not content to let Paneda control the position.
Marciano blocking the ground and pound attempt from Paneda.
Marciano keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Paneda shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Marciano pinned against the cage. Marciano gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

and Paneda counters with a one-two to the body.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Paneda drags the fight down to the ground.
Paneda manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Marciano regains half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Paneda keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Marciano throws a combination that misses
and Paneda counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
Marciano misses with a lunging right hand
and Paneda counters with a head kick.
Paneda shoots in for a double leg but Marciano sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Crunch! Paneda slams his shin into Marciano's torso.
Marciano throws a head kick that misses

and Paneda moves into the clinch.

and Paneda counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Marciano moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Paneda is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Marciano has a closed guard, preventing Paneda from standing up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Marciano trying to control the position.
Marciano seems keen to control Paneda's posture.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Rolando Paneda just wasn't active enough.

Paneda prevents the takedown attempt.

Paneda escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Horrible takedown by Paneda or perhaps it was just good defense by Marciano which made him look bad.

and Paneda counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

and he gets countered with a snapping leg kick.

The referee asks Paneda politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Paneda prefers to stall for the moment though.
Marciano is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Paneda is one step ahead and moves to full mount!

Marciano tries to hold on but Paneda pushes him away.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Marciano has given up his back, trying to stand up. Not clever.
Marciano manages to reverse the position and now he's in Paneda's guard. Nice work there by Marciano.

Well Paneda has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
