The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
James looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Smith tries for a takedown but James sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
James keeps the fight on the outside.
Smith wants to clinch.

Smith gets the takedown into side control.
Smith wants to control but James is keeping him busy.
James tries to bench press Smith off him but Smith keeps the position.
Smith working away.
Smith wants to stand but James has him controlled and pulls him back into his guard.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. James swivels though and keeps the full guard.
James avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

James has his takedown stuffed

and Smith counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Smith.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if James can do anything to dispel that myth.

James pushes Smith off and gets back to his feet.

James shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smith's guard.
Smith is looking to stand up but James isn't so interested in that idea.
James is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
James sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smith's guard.
Smith is trying to get back to full guard.
James is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
James throwing shots but Smith is blocking nicely.
James is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
James prevents Smith from standing back up.

James frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

James cracks Smith with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Smith wants to hold on but James pushes him away.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
