PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mike Angelo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Pete Doherty (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Doherty is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: You can't stand me now. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 20 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mike Angelo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 6 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Pete Doherty!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Alan Glass and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Angelo misses with a takedown
and Doherty counters with a slapping leg kick.
Mike Angelo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Doherty has taken the fight to the clinch.
Doherty lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Angelo.
Doherty softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
Angelo fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Doherty digs a right hand into Angelo's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Angelo's gas tank.
Doherty stops a takedown attempt from Angelo.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Angelo. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Still in the clinch, Doherty scores with a nice short uppercut.
Angelo has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Doherty is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Doherty lands with a good tight uppercut to the head.
Angelo jumps guard but Doherty stands there with Angelo around his waist. Angelo gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Angelo ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Angelo no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Angelo throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Doherty escapes and throws Angelo's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Doherty content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.

Angelo regains half guard.
Still in half guard, Doherty seems content to control.

Doherty looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Doherty drops an elbow to the side of Angelo's head.
Angelo wants to improve his position but Doherty is controlling well.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Doherty wants to pass to mount but Angelo is defending the position.

Angelo looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Angelo tries to bench press Doherty off him but Doherty keeps the position.
Doherty wants to lay and pray for a moment but Angelo keeps working.
Doherty in side control, just content to control the action for now.

Angelo tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Doherty wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

The strikes coming from Doherty are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pete Doherty dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Doherty cracks Angelo with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Angelo shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Doherty counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Doherty.
Doherty lands a body shot in the clinch.
Angelo fails to pull guard.

Angelo gets control of Doherty's arms and successfully pulls guard. Angelo will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Angelo keeping moving, preventing Doherty from controlling successfully.

Angelo is looking for a triangle but Doherty pushes his legs off easily.

Angelo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Doherty defends it easily.
Doherty's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Angelo has his foot on Doherty's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Doherty works his way back into a safe position though.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Angelo is looking for a triangle but Doherty pushes his legs off easily.
Doherty's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Angelo had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Doherty defends it easily.
Doherty in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Doherty is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Angelo isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Doherty stacks Angelo on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Doherty!
Doherty cracks Angelo with a big right hand but Angelo just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Angelo manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pete Doherty showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Doherty connects with a body shot that sends Angelo's belly button to the back.
Doherty rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Angelo moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Angelo drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Doherty tries to improve position but can't.
Doherty is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Angelo tries to pass to full mount but Doherty defends it.

Angelo is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Angelo looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Doherty is looking to improve his position.

Angelo is working for a kimura but Doherty is defending it quite comfortably.

Angelo is working for a submission of some sort.
Doherty gets full guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Angelo tries to free his leg and advance position but Doherty is retaining full guard.

Doherty looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Angelo has picked Doherty up and slammed him! Doherty can't keep hold of the triangle and Angelo manages to pass to side control!

Angelo goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Doherty has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Angelo but great work by Doherty.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Angelo is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Angelo manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mike Angelo.
Well Doherty has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3 rounds of action, we go to the scorecards for a decision.
