PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Pullo Kalevi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Punanaama Hullu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Punanaama Hullu will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Pullo Kalevi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Punanaama Hullu!
The judges for this bout are Anni Minnemäki, Matti Vanhoillinen and Roosa Järviläinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hullu will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Hullu stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Hullu scores with a nice head shot.

Kalevi bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Hullu tries to buck Kalevi off but Kalevi is having none of it.
Kalevi content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hullu is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Hullu is pushing Kalevi's head away, looking to escape. Kalevi manages to hold on to the position though.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kalevi is staying tight to Hullu's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Hullu is trying to get back to half guard.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Hullu wants to get back to his feet but Kalevi is dominant here and he's now got Hullu's back!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kalevi slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.
Kalevi is trying to stick to Hullu's back but Hullu is turning into Kalevi. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Kalevi's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Hullu.
Kalevi wants to stand and escape but Hullu is having none of it.

Pullo Kalevi has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Hullu enables Kalevi to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Hullu manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Hullu wants to improve his position but instead Kalevi has moved into half guard.
Hullu is looking to improve his position.

Kalevi with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Hullu is looking to improve his position.
Hullu wants to control but Kalevi is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Kalevi prevents Hullu from standing back up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Kalevi moves nicely into side control.
Hullu is being controlled here.
Kalevi advances to mount.
Kalevi controlling the pace for now.
Hullu avoids a series of strikes thrown by Kalevi.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kalevi shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Kalevi passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Hullu!

Hullu tries to hold on but Kalevi postures up.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

We're going to have a standup here because Pullo Kalevi wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Hullu misses with a double jab.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kalevi tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Hullu swivels and escapes.
Punanaama Hullu is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Hullu throws a right hand that Kalevi ducks under and follows up with a left that Kalevi also avoids with ease.
Kalevi tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hullu sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kalevi somewhat.
Kalevi will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Pullo Kalevi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Hullu scores with a hook to the body. Kalevi takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Hullu throws a combination that misses

and Kalevi counters with a nice double leg into guard.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Kalevi here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
Hullu wants to stand up but Kalevi is controlling him.

Kalevi controlling from the top position.
Hullu keeping moving, preventing Kalevi from controlling successfully.
Hullu bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kalevi's guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Pullo Kalevi dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Hullu fails to land with a series of punches.
Hullu lands with a good body shot.
Kalevi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Hullu sprawls well. Hullu wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Kalevi gets slowly back to his feet.
Hullu checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Hullu throws a series of punches but Kalevi moves out of range.
Hullu throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Hullu leaves Kalevi with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
A combination from Hullu does no damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hullu throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Kalevi looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Hullu rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kalevi moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Hullu lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Hullu gets caught flat footed, as Kalevi shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Kalevi might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kalevi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hullu swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hullu is trying to control the position from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Kalevi avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Kalevi slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kalevi slips a jab and a cross from Hullu.
Hullu lands a two punch combo.

Kalevi shoots in and bounces Hullu off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kalevi's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Punanaama Hullu has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Kalevi has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

And that's the end of the fight!
Punanaama Hullu comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kalevi has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
