The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rose throws a jab but it's blocked by Howard.

Rose closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Rose pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Howard walks into a jab.
Howard misses with a double jab.
Rose swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
Howard misses with a wild combination.
Howard swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

and Howard takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Rose throws the left hand but Howard avoids the punch easily.
Rose blocks a head kick by Howard.
Rose lands with a nice body punch.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

letting Rose counter with a right hand.

Rose manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Rose manages to break the clinch.
Rose throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

and Rose cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Marcel Howard is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Rose fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Howard looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Rose smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Howard is rocked!

Rose throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Howard was covering up waiting for the punch and Rose finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Howard is still in real trouble! Can Rose finish him?
Rose sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Howard's guard.

Howard seems to have recovered his senses.

Rose is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Rose seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Howard for as long as he can get away with.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Derrick Rose just wasn't active enough.
Howard falls off balance throwing a combination

Howard is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Howard can do anything to dispel that myth.

Rose tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Howard just stands there and leans against the cage.

Howard is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Rose pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Rose.
Howard lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Rose or not.
