Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Hughes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Major!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hughes shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Major counters with a nice body shot.
Major misses with a takedown

and Hughes counters with a single leg into guard. Major didn't expect that.
Hughes stands and throws Major's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Major dodges the ground and pound from Hughes.
Hughes has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Hughes tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Major tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hughes wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Major is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

Major is looking to advance position but Hughes has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

and Major counters with a left to the body.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hughes is looking to stand up but Major won't let him.

Major is working an open guard so Hughes takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Hughes connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Hughes avoids the attempt from Major to control.
Hughes is landing with some decent strikes but Major is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Major can't escape the position.
Hughes wants to control the pace but Major is squirming around nicely.

Major is desperately trying to improve his position but Hughes has a good base and remains in mount.

The referee warns Major that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Hughes can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Major is looking to escape.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hughes avoids the attempt from Major to control.
Hughes lands a big shot there that rocks Major but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

and Major counters with a left to the body.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Major throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hughes.

Hughes swats away the attempt to clinch by Major.

and Hughes decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Major's guard.
Major has a closed guard, preventing Hughes from standing up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hughes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Major is trying to control the position but Hughes postures up.
Hughes loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Hughes won't allow Major to sweep him here.
Hughes wants to get up but he can't break Major's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Hughes's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Hughes wants to control from the top but Major keeps moving.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Matt Hughes wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Major throws out a loose jab but Hughes uses good head movement to avoid it.

Major gets caught napping as Hughes dives in and scores a takedown. Major manages to retain guard.
Major looking to hit a scissor sweep but Hughes is one step ahead there.
Matt Hughes overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Major bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Hughes's guard.
Major pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Hughes is keeping the position for now.
Major thows a big elbow that misses.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Major is fighting to break Hughes's control of his arms but Hughes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matt Hughes showed his dominance in that final round.
