PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Merlin Phoenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Gary Gambino (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phoenix's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Simon Says. Gary Gambino will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

The judges for this bout are Skip Squint, Bruno Hogan and Hugh Johnson.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phoenix moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Gambino takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Gambino tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Phoenix misses with the combination.

Phoenix moves into the clinch successfully.
Phoenix could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Gambino is trying to break free.
Phoenix misses with a knee strike.

Phoenix breaks from the clinch.
Gambino looks to clinch
and Phoenix counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Phoenix connects with a looping right hand.
Phoenix's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Phoenix duly obliges.
Phoenix throws a head kick that misses

and Gambino counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Gambino.
Gambino has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Phoenix is proving hard to escape from.

Phoenix is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gambino is controlling him.
Gambino must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Gambino gets to his feet - Phoenix follows without any prompting.
Gambino dodges the punch combination from Phoenix.
Left hook, right uppercut from Phoenix.
Gambino misses with the body kick

and Phoenix counters by clinching up.
Gambino has had enough of the clinch but Phoenix keeps him there for the moment.
Gambino misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Gambino can't break the clinch.

Gambino shoots for a takedown but Phoenix saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Phoenix.
Gambino shoots in looking for a takedown. Phoenix tries to sprawl out of it but Gambino keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Phoenix manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Phoenix lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

Gambino clinches.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Gambino has a couple of punches blocked by Phoenix.

Phoenix breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Phoenix throws a nice outside leg kick.
Phoenix throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Gambino.
A left and a right from Phoenix both land. Nice combination.
Phoenix will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Gambino lands with a right that hurts Phoenix. Phoenix looks to clinch but Gambino throws a short knee that drops Phoenix. This one is all over!
