PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sam Lad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Otavio Smiths (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys are coming into the fight with injuries so let's see if that has a bearing on the fight. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Sam Lad!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Otavio Smiths!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Emerson Jorge and Matheus Silva.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Lad feints and as Smiths raises his hands in defense, Lad changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Smiths looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Smiths has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Lad is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Smiths.
Lad throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Lad trying to control the position but Smiths is working away.
Lad knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Smiths on the ground.
Smiths tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Lad wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Lad looks up at the clock and then as Smiths takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Lad smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Smiths can't do much from the bottom here.

Smiths is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Lad is staying active.

Lad tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Lad has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Smiths avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Lad.

Smiths sneaks out the side door and pushes Lad away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Lad tries to clinch but fails miserably
and Smiths counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Lad shoots in for a takedown but Smiths shows good takedown defense.

Lad closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Smiths did well to prevent Lad getting side control.
Lad is looking to take a break and control but Smiths is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smiths slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Smiths kicks Lad off and gets to his feet.
Lad fails with the takedown
and Smiths cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Smiths darts in and clinches Lad up against the cage.

Smiths successfully pulls guard.
Smiths keeping moving, preventing Lad from controlling successfully.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Smiths holds on and takes a little breather.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Smiths is on top in guard.

Lad is working an open guard so Smiths takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Smiths takes a kick to the side of the head.

Smiths drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Lad looking to control.
Smiths sitting in guard, not really doing much.
Lad can't keep his opponent in guard - Smiths advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Smiths working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Lad wants to improve his position but Smiths is controlling well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Otavio Smiths will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Smiths drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Smiths trying to control the position from guard on top but Lad is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Smiths stays in close to Lad's body and controls the position.
Lad wants to stand and escape but Smiths is having none of it.

Lad working for a triangle but Smiths defends it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Lad looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smiths is one step ahead there.

Smiths decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Lad, up you get!

Smiths fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Lad sprawls well initially but Smiths persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smiths is thwarting Lad's attempts to control the position.
Otavio Smiths has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smiths is controlling the pace.
Lad wants to control but Smiths is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Smiths stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Lad to get to his feet.

Smiths scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Smiths slips a nice elbow through Lad's hands, connecting with Lad's forehead.
Lad is looking for a sweep. Smiths is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Smiths slows the pace down in half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Let's hope that Smiths has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Smiths lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Smiths takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Otavio Smiths was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Smiths shoots in looking for a takedown. Lad tries to sprawl out of it but Smiths keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lad manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Lad enables Smiths to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Lad manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Smiths stands up and waves to Lad to follow him.

Smiths looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Lad!

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Otavio Smiths showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


Smiths misses with a combination

and Lad counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Smiths keeping hold of Lad's head, controlling as best he can.

Smiths manages to get to full guard.
Smiths has a closed guard, preventing Lad from standing up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Smiths bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Lad's guard.
Smiths lands a couple of digs.
Smiths tries to free his leg and advance position but Lad is retaining full guard.
Smiths passes into half guard.
Lad wants to get back to full guard.
Smiths landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent.

Smiths not doing much here.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Lad is trying to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Otavio Smiths was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Smiths shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Well, if Smiths is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

Smiths is trying to work for a kimura but Lad is defending well.
Smiths moves into full mount! Lad won't be happy about that!

Otavio Smiths comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Smiths winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
