PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Logan Armstrong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leonid Vasilevsky (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Armstrong comes into the arena with 115 blaring out of the sound system. Leonid Vasilevsky struggled to make weight for this fight. He only made it down to 146.5lbs at the first attempt and had to take the additional two hours to make the official bout weight. Let's see how much it's taken out of him. Leonid Vasilevsky is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Leonid Vasilevsky!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Armstrong bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Armstrong looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Vasilevsky blocks a head kick by Armstrong.
Vasilevsky swats away the attempt to clinch by Armstrong.

Armstrong gets caught flat footed, as Vasilevsky shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like Vasilevsky might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Leonid Vasilevsky has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Armstrong stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Armstrong wants it to stay on the feet.

Vasilevsky feints and as Armstrong raises his hands in defense, Vasilevsky changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Armstrong might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Vasilevsky controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Leonid Vasilevsky hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Armstrong slaps away a takedown attempt from Vasilevsky, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Vasilevsky feints and as Armstrong raises his hands in defense, Vasilevsky changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Vasilevsky is stalling in the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Vasilevsky's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Let's hope that Vasilevsky has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Leonid Vasilevsky wasn't active enough on the ground.
Ouch! a nice leg kick from Armstrong, right into the meat.
Vasilevsky scores with a nice right hand.

Armstrong closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Vasilevsky unloads a knee to the mid-section.

Vasilevsky is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Armstrong can't fight it off and eventually Vasilevsky manages to take the fight to the floor. Armstrong looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Armstrong knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Vasilevsky on the ground.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Vasilevsky throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Armstrong works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Armstrong is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Vasilevsky is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Leonid Vasilevsky hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Vasilevsky unloads with some shots from mount but Armstrong bucks and avoids them well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Vasilevsky drops back looking for a leg! Armstrong is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Armstrong manages to kick Vasilevsky off! Vasilevsky jumps back into Armstrong's guard.
Vasilevsky not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Leonid Vasilevsky.

Vasilevsky shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Vasilevsky seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Armstrong wants to get back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Vasilevsky seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vasilevsky seems to be working for a kimura but Armstrong defends the submission attempt.

Leonid Vasilevsky has got the better of the ground game so far.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Vasilevsky works his way into side control.

Vasilevsky has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Vasilevsky misses with a head shot.

Vasilevsky looking to ground and pound but Armstrong is blocking nicely.
Armstrong holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Vasilevsky tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
