PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Andrew Hansen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Bill Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Hansen might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to "Now You've Got Something to Die For" by Lamb of God. Andrew Hansen has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Andrew Hansen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Bill Russell!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russell tries to clinch

and Hansen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Russell keeping full guard, as Hansen tries to pass.
Hansen slips nicely into half guard.
Hansen is pressing down on Russell's thigh, looking to free his foot. Russell is holding on for now.
Russell trying to control from the bottom.
Hansen is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Hansen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Russell is staying active underneath Hansen, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Russell trying to hold on to Hansen's head to control him but Hansen postures up.
Russell is trying to stand back up but Hansen is controlling him

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

and Hansen counters with a nice low kick that buckles Russell's knee momentarily.

Hansen misses with a takedown attempt - Russell sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

Hansen is wriggling around trying to escape.
Hansen tries to lock up and control but Russell gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Hansen tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Hansen blocking the ground and pound.

Russell thowing shots but they're missing.
Russell lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Hansen avoids a series of strikes thrown by Russell.

Russell swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Hansen is now in Russell's guard. A big mistake from Russell there, giving up the dominant position!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Hansen lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Russell wants to sweep but no luck.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Russell is on top in guard.
Russell would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Russell is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Hansen is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Hansen has escaped and now he's on top!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Russell is trying to keep Hansen in close.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.



Russell shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hansen is trying to defend but Russell finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Hansen tries to kick Russell off but Russell keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Hansen wants to control but Russell is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Russell is looking to stall here but Hansen recovers full guard.

Hansen keeping moving, preventing Russell from controlling successfully.
Russell is fighting to break Hansen's control of his arms but Hansen is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Russell won't allow Hansen to sweep him here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Russell wanted to stand there but Hansen had control of the position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Hansen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Hansen on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Hansen tries to get out of the position.
Russell trying to control but Hansen is working from the bottom.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Russell looking to sit in guard and control but Hansen gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Hansen postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Hansen trying to control but Russell is working from the bottom.
Russell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Hansen manages to get himself to full guard.
Andrew Hansen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Hansen keeping moving, preventing Russell from controlling successfully.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Russell wants to get up but he can't break Hansen's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Russell decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Russell is thwarting Hansen's attempts to control the position.

Russell content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Russell stalling away here and it's allowed Hansen to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Russell is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Bill Russell.
Hansen shoots and misses

and Russell decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Hansen's guard.
Russell wanted to stand there but Hansen had control of the position.

Hansen keeping moving, preventing Russell from controlling successfully.
Hansen is pulling down on Russell's head. It's preventing any offense from Russell, at least for the moment.
Hansen is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Russell dives into side control.

Russell in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Russell lands a decent elbow from side control.
Russell taking a break here but Hansen is having none of it and regains half guard.
Russell is stalling here. Hansen is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Russell seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Hansen has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Hansen tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Russell gets back to half guard.
Russell tries to get to full guard but Hansen has control of the leg.
Russell is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Hansen's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Hansen's back!

And that's the end of the fight!
Bill Russell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Russell has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
