PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Tyson John (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Wade (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John comes to the cage accompanied by I m. Wade has chosen awsome as his entrance music. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tyson John!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, James Wade!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Anthony Taglia and David Schapiro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

John closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Wade is controlling John's position as best he can from this difficult position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
John seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Wade does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
John takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
John is trying to control. Wade wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

We're going to have a standup here because Tyson John wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Wade pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Wade shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Wade pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. John is keeping the position for now.
John looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
John wants to stand but Wade is controlling the position.

John has his foot on Wade's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Wade works his way back into a safe position though.
John keeping moving, preventing Wade from controlling successfully.

Wade gets to his feet. John looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Wade shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in John's guard.
John is breathing heavily.

Wade drops back, looking for a kneebar! John looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. John looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from John!
John tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
John looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Wade is avoiding damage well.
Both fighters take a look at the clock.

John decides to stand up, so the ref orders Wade to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

A momentary lapse in concentration from John enables Wade to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. John manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Wade tries to free his leg and advance position but John is retaining full guard.
John is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Wade stands and steps away. John gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Wade closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Wade happy to just control the position for now.
John is trying to control Wade's posture but Wade avoids it.
John is looking for a sweep.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Wade wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by John, who protects the arm well.
John struggling a bit here.

Wade decides to take the fight back to the feet.
John shoots in for a double leg but Wade sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Wade fails with a takedown attempt.
John shoots for a takedown but Wade saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Wade leaves John with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyson John. That's going to take a lot out of him.
John fails in his attempt to clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Wade tries to clinch there but John circles away.
John lands with a kick to the temple. Wade shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
No joy there for Wade, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

John tries to keep at a distance but Wade has taken the fight into the clinch.
John fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Wade keeps the fight in the clinch, despite John's efforts to push away.
John wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Wade has him pressed against the cage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
John throws a nice elbow but it doesn't land.
John has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Wade is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Wade lands a body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Wade dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


John tries to clinch but Wade is having none of it.

Wade closes the distance and clinches.
John is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Wade gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Wade breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
James Wade seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
John misses with a wild combination.
John is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
John throws a body kick that misses.

Wade gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
John is working for takedown but Wade is calmly controlling the position for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wade looking for a takedown.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Wade breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
John tries to clinch up.
John shoots in looking for a takedown. Wade tries to sprawl out of it but John keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wade manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Tyson John. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Wade shoots in and bounces John off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Wade controlling from the top position.

Wade gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
John circles away from the clinch attempt.

Wade is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in John's half guard.
Wade not doing much here.
John won't allow Wade to pass to mount.

Wade is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
John trying to hold on to Wade's head to control him but Wade postures up.

John is defending against the submission attempts here by Wade.

Wade looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

John manages to get to full guard.
Wade preventing the sweep.
Wade passes John's left leg - he's now in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
John wants to improve his position but Wade is controlling well.

Wade is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. John doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Wade.

Wade stands up from half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Wade showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


John connects with a solid leg kick.
John stuffs the takedown attempt from Wade. Wade gets slowly back to his feet.
John circles away from the clinch attempt.

John instigates a clinch.
John can't get the takedown.
Wade tries for a takedown but John manages to get underhooks.

John manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
John looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wade is one step ahead there.
Wade trying to control the position from guard on top but John is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
John really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
John controls Wade momentarily but Wade frees himself.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Wade won't allow John to sweep him here.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Wade postures up.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Tyson John just wasn't active enough.
Wade tries to clinch up but John circles away and keeps his distance.

Wade gets a double leg takedown into John's guard.
John striking off his back but it's not causing Wade any problems.
Wade stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. John swivels though and keeps the full guard.

John had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wade defends it easily.
John wants to stand up but Wade is controlling him.
James Wade has got the better of the ground game so far.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Wade is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Wade controlling from the top position.

Wade drops back looking for a leg! John is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and John manages to kick Wade off! Wade jumps back into John's guard.
John looking to control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
John looking to hit a scissor sweep but Wade is one step ahead there.

Wade drops back for a leg here. A bit of a high risk move... He's looking for a kneebar by the looks of things. Now both of them are looking for submissions. Wade seems to have locked his on tight now - John screams in pain and taps out furiously! It certainly was a high risk move but it's paid off for Wade, as he picks up the win!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:39 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kneebar). James Wade!
