The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
DeNiro tries to clinch but Mason moves away

and Mason counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
DeNiro tries to get to full guard but Mason has control of the leg.
Mason slows the pace down in half guard.
DeNiro slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
DeNiro not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Mason is stalling in the full guard.
Mason tries to free his leg and advance position but DeNiro is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

DeNiro has his foot on Mason's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mason works his way back into a safe position though.
DeNiro has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Mason has passed into side control.

Mason swings around for an armbar but DeNiro sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Mason's guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

DeNiro is trying to control. Mason wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mason is breathing heavily.
DeNiro postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

DeNiro fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Mason avoids it really well and circles away.

Mason fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. DeNiro sprawls well initially but Mason persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Jason Mason overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Mason tries to stand and escape but DeNiro actually recovers to full guard.
DeNiro manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Mason manages to get himself to full guard.
DeNiro wants to control from the top but Mason keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Jason Mason has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dwight DeNiro.

DeNiro gets control of Mason's arms and successfully pulls guard. DeNiro will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
