Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mike Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kazushi Sakurai!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Hogan, Summer Carpenter and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sakurai swings widly with a right hand

and Smith counters with a takedown into side control.
Smith trying to control the action but Sakurai is working from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sakurai is looking for a sweep.
Smith controls the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sakurai prevents Smith from improving position.
Sakurai regains half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sakurai is refusing to be controlled, as Smith sits in half guard.

Sakurai looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Smith with the ground and pound but Sakurai uses the opportunity to regain guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Sakurai keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Sakurai wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

Sakurai had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.
Smith postures up and lands a big shot to Sakurai's brow.

Sakurai is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Sakurai is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Sakurai is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

That was a close round but I would say that Mike Smith will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Sakurai bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.
Sakurai throws a head kick but Smith moves out of range.
Smith misses with a takedown attempt

and Sakurai counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Smith has his hands clasped together around Sakurai's back. He's all about the action.
Sakurai trying to control the action but Smith is working from the bottom.

Smith on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Smith tries to get out of the position.
Sakurai misses with a head shot. Smith uses the momentum to regain guard.
Sakurai trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Sakurai wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Kazushi Sakurai.
Smith bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Sakurai misses with a double jab.
Smith steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Sakurai.
Mike Smith is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Smith uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Sakurai.
Sakurai shoots and misses

and Smith counters with a single leg into guard. Sakurai didn't expect that.

Sakurai is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Sakurai stalling away here and it's allowed Smith to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Sakurai tries to free his leg and advance position but Smith is retaining full guard.
Sakurai postures up in Smith's guard and throws a big left but Smith blocks it.

Sakurai postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sakurai, into his guard.
Smith trying to control but Sakurai is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Sakurai bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Smith's guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sakurai's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Sakurai postures up.

Sakurai decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Smith gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Sakurai counters with a single leg into guard. Smith didn't expect that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kazushi Sakurai showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Smith's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Sakurai misses with a straight right.
Sakurai moves out of range of the body kick.
Sakurai doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Smith decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Sakurai's guard.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sakurai swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Sakurai keeping full guard, as Smith tries to pass.
Smith throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Smith throws and elbow that misses. Sakurai uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Smith's guard. Nice move by Sakurai!
Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sakurai on the ground.

Sakurai postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Sakurai, into his guard.
Sakurai wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Smith trying to control but Sakurai is working from the bottom.
Smith throws a big right hand that misses.
Smith scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Sakurai looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Smith makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Sakurai wants to sweep but no luck.
Sakurai has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up.

Sakurai had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith won't allow Sakurai to sweep him here.

Smith got a little sloppy there for a moment and Sakurai has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Smith has managed to get both his arms back between Sakurai's legs - danger averted.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Sakurai swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Kazushi Sakurai has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith is working hard here to advance position.

And that's the end of the fight!
Mike Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Smith has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
