The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A big left from Penn misses.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Penn enables Silva to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Penn manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Silva drops back, looking for a kneebar! Penn looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Penn looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Penn!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Silva tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Penn looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Penn tries to move into full mount but can't pass Silva's legs.
Silva is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Penn's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Silva is looking for a triangle but Penn pushes his legs off easily.

Penn got a little sloppy there for a moment and Silva has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Penn has managed to get both his arms back between Silva's legs - danger averted.

Silva has his foot on Penn's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Penn works his way back into a safe position though.

Silva has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Penn can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Silva had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Penn defends it easily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Penn is trying to work for a kimura but Silva is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Roger Silva dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Silva shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Penn as he avoids it easily.

Silva thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Silva postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Penn is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Silva, into his guard.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Silva swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Silva is breathing heavily.

Penn is working hard here to advance position.

Silva has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Penn can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Penn is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Silva manages to get to full guard.

Silva looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Penn is defending well. Silva quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Penn has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Silva celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
