The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Akiyama throws a combination that misses
and Michaels counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

It looks like Yoshihiro Akiyama has been cut.
Akiyama looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Michaels's jab looks to have found its range, popping Akiyama under the eye.

Michaels shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Michaels showed some decent athleticism there.
Michaels content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Michaels has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Michaels looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Akiyama won't allow Michaels to pass to mount.

Michaels is taking a breather. Akiyama says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Akiyama has hold of Michaels's hands but Michaels slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Michaels looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Michaels's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Michaels stalks Akiyama and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Akiyama's face. Akiyama staggers backwards, shaken.

Akiyama is rocked!

Michaels drops Akiyama with a naaaaasty hook - Akiyama is in real trouble here! Michaels dives in to side control and pounds out his opponent for a TKO victory! The crowd goes nuts!
