PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between James Tony (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mauricio Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rua has chosen Slayed as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Mauricio Rua was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Tony!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mauricio Rua!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua throws a lazy right hand but Tony sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Tony uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Rua.
Good work by Tony as he checks the leg kick.
Rua misses with a head kick.
Rua misses with a low kick.
Rua misses with a hook.
Tony showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Rua.
Sloppy strikes from Rua. Those never looked like landing.
Rua tries to land a leg kick but Tony saw it coming and moves away.
Tony fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done.
Tony keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Tony fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Rua, pushing him back against the ropes.

Tony manages to break the clinch.
Rua looks to land a combination but Tony avoids it well.
Tony lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.


It looks like Mauricio Rua has been cut.
Tony uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Rua.
Rua pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Rua needs to keep his hands up - Tony had a free shot at his head there.
Rua takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
A jab from Rua misses.
Rua throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Rua decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Tony tries to get to full guard but Rua has control of the leg.
Rua wants to free his trapped foot but Tony is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Rua throwing shots but Tony is blocking nicely.
Tony is pressing down on Rua's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Rua postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Tony wants to sweep here but Rua controlling him for the moment.
Rua trying to control the position from guard on top but Tony is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Rua tries to free his leg and advance position but Tony is retaining full guard.

Tony has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Rua can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Rua working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Tony's head.

Rua won't allow Tony to sweep him here.
Tony keeping moving, preventing Rua from controlling successfully.
Tony is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rua must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Tony is pulling down on Rua's head. It's preventing any offense from Rua, at least for the moment.
Rua wants to control from the top but Tony keeps moving.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Mauricio Rua has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Tony connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Rua momentarily.

Rua throws a low kick but it's checked well by Tony.
Rua misses with a low kick.
Rua circles away from the clinch attempt
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
and Rua counters with a good low kick that Tony was not able to check.
Rua lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Tony circles away quickly and effectively.
Rua tries to work over Tony's front leg with a kick but Tony checks it.
Tony lands a jab to Rua's midsection.
A combination from Rua does no damage.
Tony shoots in and drives through. Rua sprawls well.
Rua keeps Tony at a distance using the push kick.
Tony lands a slapping body shot.
Rua blocks a head kick by Tony.
Rua loads up on a big right hand but Tony slips the punch.
A nice leg kick lands there from Rua.
Rua swings widly with a right hand
and Tony counters with a nice uppercut.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Rua. Tony shrugs it off though.
Tony slips a straight right by Rua.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rua misses with a hook

and Tony counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Tony using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.

Tony breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Tony gets a double leg takedown into Rua's guard.
Tony is breathing heavily.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Tony passes into half guard.
Tony looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Rua is looking to improve his position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Rua is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Tony's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Tony's back!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James Tony dominated that round.

Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Tony feints and then cracks Rua's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Rua down.
Tony tries to clinch
and Rua makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
Rua is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Tony.
Rua throws a predictable looking body shot
enabling Tony to counter with a crisp jab.
Rua has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Rua there as he acknowledges the shot.
Tony doesn't manage to clinch there - Rua circles away.
Rua scores with the left hand. Tony knows he should have avoided that one.
Nice sprawl there from Tony as Rua shoots in.
Tony slips under a jab.
Rua fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Tony manages to avoid it.
Rua throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Rua takes a shot right to the bread basket.

Tony closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Rua did well to prevent Tony getting side control.
Rua trying to control but Tony postures up.

Rua wants to get back to full guard.
Rua is refusing to be controlled, as Tony sits in half guard.
Tony passes to side control.
Tony cracks Rua with a big elbow.
Rua is looking to reverse the position.
Tony is looking to take a break and control but Rua is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Tony is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Rua is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Tony misses with the ground and pound.
Tony trying to control the action but Rua is working from the bottom.
Rua prevents Tony from improving position.
Rua struggling a bit here.
Rua manages to get back to half guard.
Rua is in trouble now - Tony has advanced to mount!

Rua wants to hold on but Tony pushes him away.

Tony is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Rua has managed to escape the submission attempt.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Tony throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Tony scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Rua?

Tony controlling the position easily from mount.
Tony lands a big shot there that rocks Rua but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Rua tries to hold on but Tony pushes him away.
Tony postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Rua looks a forlorn figure.
Tony pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Rua is desperately trying to improve his position but Tony has a good base and remains in mount.
Tony can't control as he wanted to and Rua manages to get the fight back to his half guard.

Tony seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Rua is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). James Tony!
