PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jemdet Nasr (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jemdet Nasr!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Frank Smith!
The judges for this bout are Eliza Hachem, Steve Erwin and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nasr connects with a single shot there.


It looks like Frank Smith has been cut.
The fight stays on the outside here - Smith looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Nasr closes the distance and clinches.

Nasr pulls Smith into guard.
Smith postures up.

Nasr working for a triangle but Smith defends it easily.
Smith lands a couple of elbows.
Smith distracts Nasr with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Nasr looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Nasr working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Smith.
Smith forces his way into half guard.
Nasr wants to control but Smith is keeping busy.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Smith connects with a nice short shot to Nasr's temple.
Smith is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Smith throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Nasr won't allow Smith to pass to mount.
Nasr trying to hold on to Smith's head to control him but Smith postures up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nasr is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Smith drops an elbow to the side of Nasr's head.
Smith looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Smith sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Nasr defending well though.
Smith is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Nasr blocking the ground and pound attempt from Smith.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Nasr shoots in but no luck this time.
Jemdet Nasr seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch but Nasr swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Nasr cracks Smith with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Smith tries to clinch but Nasr is having none of it.

Nasr shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smith's guard.
Nasr postures up and lands a big shot to Smith's brow.
Smith has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Nasr stopping the sweep attempt from Smith.
Smith will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.

Nasr seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Nasr sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smith's guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
Nasr is pressing down on Smith's thigh, looking to free his foot. Smith is holding on for now.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Nasr passes the guard and advances to mount!
Nasr fails to take his opponent's back.
Nasr breaks from Smith's wrist control and lands an elbow.
Smith tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Smith regains half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Nasr slows the pace down in half guard.

Nasr is working for a kimura but Smith is defending it quite comfortably.
Smith on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Nasr is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Smith works his way to full guard. Good work.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nasr wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position.
Nasr is working hard here to advance position.
Nasr trying to control the position from guard on top but Smith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Nasr is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Nasr wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Nasr looks for a takedown but Smith sprawls well.
Nasr throws out a loose jab but Smith uses good head movement to avoid it.
Smith moves in looking to clinch but Nasr pushes him off.
Nasr closes the distance and clinches up with Smith, looking for a takedown. Nasr pushes Smith against the cage but Smith circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jemdet Nasr. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Nasr shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Smith has hold of Nasr's hands but Nasr slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Nasr is working for a submission of some sort.
Smith gets full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nasr passes into half guard.
Nasr working over Smith with some ground and pound. Smith looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.

Smith moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Smith thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Nasr controls from within his opponent's guard.

Nasr drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Nasr jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Nasr wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Nasr is looking to stand up but Smith won't let him.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Smith trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Nasr sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Smith's guard.

Nasr seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Smith is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jemdet Nasr!
