PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kim Jong Il (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kari Tapio (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tapio comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Cannibal Corpse kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kim Jong Il!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kari Tapio!
The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Roosa Järviläinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Tapio gets tackled into the cage by Il. Il maintains the clinch.
Tapio goes for a takedown in the clinch but Il prevents it.
Tapio misses with the head strike.
Tapio wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Il has him pressed against the cage.

Tapio fails to pull guard.
Kim Jong Il has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Kari Tapio.
Il has Tapio pressed against the cage, preventing Tapio from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Tapio jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Il walks away with a smile on his face. Tapio gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Il moves to clinch but Tapio breaks away
and Tapio counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

and Tapio counters with a three punch combo that has Il backing up. Il nods at Tapio to acknowledge the strikes.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

so Tapio counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Tapio wants to stand but Il is controlling his posture from full guard.

Il is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Tapio trying to control the position from guard on top but Il is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Tapio thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Il looking to hit a scissor sweep but Tapio is one step ahead there.

Il is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Tapio is aware though and is defending well.
Il keeping moving, preventing Tapio from controlling successfully.
Tapio postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Tapio wants to control from the top but Il keeps moving.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Il has his foot on Tapio's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Tapio works his way back into a safe position though.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Il working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Tapio doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Tapio manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Il is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Tapio defends well.
Tapio passes Il's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Tapio seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Tapio is working for a kimura but Il is defending it quite comfortably.
Tapio is keen to just control but Il is a slippery customer.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Tapio is taking a breather. Il says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Il is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Tapio pulls his head out easily.

Tapio is working for a kimura but Il is defending it quite comfortably.
Tapio works his way into side control.
Tapio tries to move to mount but Il blocks the move with his legs.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Il sneaks back into half guard.
Il avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Tapio.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Tapio tries to stand and escape but Il is controlling the position.
Tapio winds up and cracks Il with a swinging punch to the side of the head.

Tapio is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Il doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Tapio.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Il defending against the ground and pound.
Il manages to get back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kari Tapio dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Il wants to clinch but Tapio slips to the side

and Tapio counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Kari Tapio has got the better of the ground game so far.
Tapio not landing any meaningful shots this time.
Il is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Tapio's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Tapio's back!

Tapio won't enjoy being in this position. Il looking for the choke. Oh... he's slipped the arm under the neck - Tapio is tapping - it's over boys! Il picks up the submission victory!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:30 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Kim Jong Il!
