PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Dominick Cruz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Fabio Chielanno (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fabio Chielanno will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Dominick Cruz!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Fabio Chielanno!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Sergei Dronov.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chielanno with a poor takedown

and Cruz moves into the clinch.
Chielanno wants a takedown but no success here.

Cruz has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Chielanno regains guard immediately.

Cruz is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Chielanno had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Cruz defends it easily.
Cruz controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Cruz might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Cruz trying to control the position from guard on top but Chielanno is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Dominick Cruz wasn't doing enough on the ground.

Cruz forces Chielanno back against the cage and clinches.

Dominick Cruz has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fabio Chielanno.

Chielanno drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.

and Cruz counters with a nice double leg into side control. Chielanno won't be happy with that.
Chielanno wants to control but Cruz postures up.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Cruz thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Cruz is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Chielanno's shoulder. That is not cool.
Chielanno tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Cruz wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Cruz is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Cruz grinds an elbow into Chielanno's temple.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Chielanno tries to improve position but can't.

Cruz is trying to get an arm triangle but Chielanno is defending well.
Cruz is breathing heavily.

Cruz decides to stand back up.
Chielanno misses with a few strikes there.
Fabio Chielanno seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Cruz darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Cruz prevents Chielanno from improving his position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dominick Cruz dominated that round.

Chielanno moves out of range of the leg kick from Cruz.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Chielanno!
Chielanno lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Cruz takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.

Cruz fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Chielanno to the ground. Cruz is now in Chielanno's guard.

Chielanno is looking for a triangle here but Cruz uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
A lull in the action here as Cruz stalls from top position.
Chielanno prevents Cruz from moving into mount.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Cruz staying calm.
Cruz trying to control the action but Chielanno is working from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Cruz creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Chielanno sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Cruz is looking to take a break and control but Chielanno is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Chielanno is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Chielanno wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Chielanno gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Cruz trying to mount his opponent but Chielanno defends it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Dominick Cruz wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Chielanno feints a jab promting Cruz to slip. Chielanno then demonstrates his capabilities by jabbing again. Cruz slips again and ducks right into an uppercut.
Chielanno shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Cruz counters with a nice double leg into side control. Chielanno won't be happy with that.
Cruz tries to advance to mount but can't.

Cruz swings around for an armbar but Chielanno sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Cruz's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chielanno tries to free his leg and advance position but Cruz is retaining full guard.
Chielanno must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Chielanno throwing strikes but missing.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Dominick Cruz dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. And we move into the final round!

A right-left combo lands from Chielanno.
Chielanno throws a right and a left that both miss.

Cruz closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Chielanno quickly recovers to half guard.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Chielanno seems a little lost for a moment, as Cruz dominates the positioning.

Chielanno tries to improve position but can't.
Chielanno is looking to get back to his feet here but Cruz is keeping cool and he's managed to take Chielanno's back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cruz is striking well from the back but Chielanno escapes and manages to control the positon and works his way to half guard. A much better position - the crisis is over for the time being.

Chielanno kicks Cruz off and gets back to his feet.
Dominick Cruz is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Chielanno connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Chielanno misses with a wild combination.
Chielanno misses with a body kick.
Chielanno slips a jab from Cruz.
Chielanno fails with the takedown

and Cruz counters with a shoot takedown. Chielanno fights it but they end up in guard.

Dominick Cruz overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Chielanno working for a triangle but Cruz defends it easily.
Chielanno can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Cruz controls the pace.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cruz, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
