PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Hajime no Ipo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aoki King (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying King's choice of entrance music: I'm on a boat. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Aoki King was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Hajime no Ipo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aoki King!
The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Yamamoto, Taro Takaoka and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

King scores with a takedown into no Ipo's guard.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells King's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
King wants to control from the top but no Ipo keeps moving.
no Ipo working a defensive guard here.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
King trying to control the position from guard on top but no Ipo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
King wants to pass the guard but no Ipo is keeping the position.
King lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
King stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. no Ipo swivels though and keeps the full guard.
King passes into half guard.
no Ipo won't allow King to pass to mount.
King is looking to take a break and control but no Ipo is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

King is trying to work for a kimura but no Ipo is defending well.

no Ipo actively working from the bottom here.
Nice strikes from King there.
King wants to lay and pray for a moment but no Ipo keeps working.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

no Ipo closes the distance and clinches.

no Ipo pulls guard successfully.

no Ipo has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but King can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

King stands and throws no Ipo's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
no Ipo is looking for a sweep.
no Ipo is breathing heavily.
King connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused no Ipo some visible discomfort.
King is chipping away with strikes.
King trying to control the action but no Ipo is working from the bottom.

King tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no King has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
no Ipo is trying to buck King off.
no Ipo tries to improve position but can't.
King looks up at the clock and then as no Ipo takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, King smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!

no Ipo takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Check out the look on King's face as he threw that strike - that's one determined fighter!
no Ipo is looking to regain half guard here but King keeps moving and retains side control.
King working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
no Ipo is trying to work for a sweep but King has mounted him!
King looking to finish no Ipo with some ground and pound. This is bad for no Ipo!
no Ipo is looking to get to half guard.

King has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, King cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
no Ipo tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aoki King dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


King shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts no Ipo as he jumps to the side.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from King.
no Ipo connects with a vicious head kick that knocks King to the floor! no Ipo dives in looking for the finish!


King is rocked!

no Ipo is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
King is still on wobbly legs! Can no Ipo finish him?

no Ipo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
King seems to have recovered his senses.
King makes his way to full guard. A much better position for King.
King keeping full guard, as no Ipo tries to pass.
no Ipo is on the wrong end of a couple of strikes there.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

King is looking for a triangle but no Ipo pushes his legs off easily.
no Ipo wants to pass the guard but King is keeping the position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
King is trying to control the position from the bottom.
King doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
no Ipo tries to free his leg and advance position but King is retaining full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
King looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? no Ipo is fending him off so far but King persists. Nope, no Ipo circles away and we're back to standing.
Hajime no Ipo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Aoki King.
King attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
King shoots in but no Ipo avoids the takedown attempt easily.
King throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around no Ipo's waist but no Ipo gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing King off to one side.
no Ipo tries to clinch up but King circles away and keeps his distance.
King throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
King shoots in but no luck this time.
King fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Nice takedown defense from no Ipo. No joy for King on that attempt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
King misses with a takedown attempt - no Ipo sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.

no Ipo instigates a clinch.

no Ipo wants the takedown. King is fighting it off but no Ipo persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in King's guard against the ropes.
King looking for a sweep. Not yet King, not yet.
King trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
King with a couple of shots from the bottom there - nothing no Ipo can't handle though.
King manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. no Ipo manages to get himself to full guard.
no Ipo has momentary wrist control but King slips an elbow through the middle.


no Ipo is rocked!
King postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Oh no Ipo is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
King passes into half guard.
King is keen to just control but no Ipo is a slippery customer.
no Ipo seems to have got his legs back now.

no Ipo actively working from the bottom here.
King is trying to control the action in half guard but no Ipo is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

no Ipo has guillotine here! It looks pretty tight! Could this be all over! No, King escapes and passes into side control at the same time. Nice work there by King!
no Ipo taking punishment in the form of punches.
no Ipo is looking to reverse the position.
no Ipo is working hard here to advance position.
no Ipo gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
no Ipo sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
no Ipo tries to roll over but King keeps him under control.
no Ipo manages to get to full guard.

King drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and King jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

King stands up over no Ipo, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
King trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
no Ipo misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
King misses with a takedown

and no Ipo counters with a shoot takedown. King fights it but they end up in guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
no Ipo tries to free his leg and advance position but King is retaining full guard.
King throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
King is trying to keep no Ipo in close.
King is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
King working over no Ipo with some ground and pound. no Ipo looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hajime no Ipo dominated that second round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!

no Ipo slips nicely into half guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

no Ipo is working for a kimura but King is defending it quite comfortably.
King regains full guard. Nicely done.

no Ipo is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! King is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! King has escaped and now he's on top!

Aoki King has got the better of the ground game so far.

no Ipo is looking for a triangle here but King uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
no Ipo manages to work his way to half guard, despite King's best efforts.

no Ipo wants to get back to full guard but King has mounted him!
King prevents no Ipo from getting the reversal.
King connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, King cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
no Ipo tries to improve his position but instead King has taken his back!
King looking to soften up his opponent with punches.

no Ipo defends a rear naked choke attempt by controlling one of King's arms.
Can no Ipo hold on?! King is landing more strikes to his hapless foe.
King is working the ground and pound. Can no Ipo escape?
The referee is taking a good look at no Ipo as he is on the wrong end of some big shots from King!

no Ipo rolls, trying to escape but King keeps control of the position.
King connects with a big shot to the side of no Ipo's head.
no Ipo covers up after taking a massive shot to the side of the head.
no Ipo trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
King scores with punches from the back.

King has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for no Ipo.

no Ipo defending nicely against the rear naked choke attempt.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
no Ipo breaks King's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
King throws a couple of heel strikes.
King controls no Ipo momentarily but no Ipo frees himself.

no Ipo postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! King is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of no Ipo, into his guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
King wants to control from the top but no Ipo keeps moving.

no Ipo is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Aoki King comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think King has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
