PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Chad Brewster (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Demon Maia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Brewster comes to the cage accompanied by Way of the Fist. Maia has chosen Numb/Encore as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Chad Brewster!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Demon Maia!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maia throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Brewster pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Brewster closes the distance and clinches.

Brewster decides to pull guard.
Maia trying to control but Brewster is working from the bottom.
Brewster is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Brewster is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brewster looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Maia with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Brewster seems to be working for a kimura but Maia defends the submission attempt.
Maia manages to get to full guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Brewster trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Brewster drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Maia manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Brewster has Maia in his guard.
Brewster seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Maia works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Maia wants to advance to full mount but Brewster doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.
Maia tries to free his leg and advance position but Brewster is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Brewster is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Brewster moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Maia avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Brewster trying to keep a closed guard but Maia is proving a slippery customer.
Maia looking to pass the guard.
Maia is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Maia advances to half guard.
Maia wants to free his trapped foot but Brewster is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Maia uses his free foot to push down on Brewster's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Brewster.

Maia fails to advance to Brewster's back.
Maia takes Brewster's back. Could be looking for a rear naked choke here - either way, Brewster is in trouble.

Brewster turns into Maia and is now in his guard.

Brewster trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Maia manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

Brewster is looking for a triangle but Maia pushes his legs off easily.
Maia stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Brewster swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Brewster is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Maia must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Brewster is on top in guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Demon Maia will probably get the nod.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Brewster tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Maia is able to avoid easily.
Brewster fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Maia throws a sloppy head kick and Brewster moves out of range easily.

and Maia counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Brewster tries to clinch up but Maia circles away and keeps his distance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Maia is trying to control. Brewster wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Maia wants to pass to mount but Brewster is defending the position.

Maia is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Brewster has managed to free his arm - good work.

Brewster slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Maia looking to pass the guard.
Brewster wants to sweep but no luck.
Maia wanted to stand there but Brewster had control of the position.
Demon Maia has got the better of the ground game so far.
Brewster bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Maia's guard.

Brewster postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Maia is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Brewster, into his guard.

Maia drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Maia jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Maia looking to improve position, pressing down on Brewster's thigh with his hand. Brewster seems to be working to lock up a guilotine though... is Maia paying attention? Apparently not! He's locked it up tight! Maia's face has turned purple! Will he tap? Will he! YES! He's tapped! Brewster picked his opening and made it count! Great finish!
