Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Fred Alexander (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cameron Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fred Alexander has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Fred Alexander!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Cameron Smith!
The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Daniel Cesar and Luis Engracia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith scores with a hook to the body. Alexander takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Smith throws a combination. Alexander tries to block but a couple of punches get through.
Smith throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Alexander counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Smith is trying to maintain the position but Alexander is very close to passing his half guard.
Smith is trying to stand.
Alexander will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Smith is not content to let Alexander control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith trying to hold on to Alexander's head to control him but Alexander postures up.

Alexander is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Alexander perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Smith desperately trying to maintain half guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Smith misses with a series of wild punches.
Smith throws a left and a right that both miss

and Alexander counters with a takedown into side control.
Alexander is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Smith will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Smith is trying to improve his position.
Alexander is staying tight to Smith's torso, preventing him from escaping.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

We're going to have a standup here because Fred Alexander wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Smith swings for the body but Alexander moves out of range.
Alexander throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

and Alexander counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Alexander.
Smith gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Alexander.
Alexander keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Smith's efforts to push away.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Alexander is trying to drag Smith to the mat but Smith just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Smith swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Alexander counters with a nice double leg into side control. Smith won't be happy with that.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Alexander has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


No joy there for Smith, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Smith rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Alexander moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Alexander drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Alexander is looking to take a break and control but Smith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Smith is trying to control Alexander's posture but Alexander avoids it.
Alexander cracks Smith with a big elbow.

Smith stops Alexander from passing to mount.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Smith is trying to control Alexander's posture but Alexander avoids it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Alexander throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Smith was covering up waiting for the punch and Alexander finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Alexander wants to pass the guard but Smith is keeping the position.

Smith is trying to keep Alexander in close.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Cameron Smith was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Alexander doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Smith counters with a series of strikes. Alexander will be more careful next time no doubt.

Alexander ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
No luck for Alexander with that takedown attempt.
Smith tries to bum rush Alexander with a series of wild strikes but Alexander uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Fred Alexander. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Smith will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Smith throws a right and a left that Alexander avoids nicely.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Alexander tries to clinch up but Smith circles away and keeps his distance.
Cameron Smith is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!


Smith dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Smith fails to land with a series of punches.
Alexander shoots in for a double leg but Smith sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Smith looks to throw the jab but Alexander is out of range.
Alexander misses with a hook to the body
and Smith counters with a three punch combo that has Alexander backing up. Alexander nods at Smith to acknowledge the strikes.

and Alexander counters with a shoot takedown. Smith fights it but they end up in guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Smith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Smith throws a series of punches but Alexander moves out of range.
Smith lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Alexander circles away quickly and effectively.
Alexander works Smith's body with a nice hook.
Alexander dodges the punch combination from Smith.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smith misses with a combination

and Alexander counters with a single leg into guard. Smith didn't expect that.
Smith takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Alexander controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Alexander stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Fred Alexander overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Alexander goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Smith rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Alexander's guard! Nice work there by Smith!
Smith is looking to stand up but Alexander won't let him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Smith wants to control from the top but Alexander keeps moving.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Smith enables Alexander to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Smith manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Fred Alexander showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Alexander, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
