PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Robert Pawter (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carl Sagan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sagan is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Drowning Pool - Bodies. Carl Sagan acknowledges the crowd's support as he enters the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Robert Pawter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Carl Sagan!
The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Jack Bonds and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A shot to the body from Pawter misses
and Sagan counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Pawter thinking.
Sagan pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Pawter back to the cage. Sagan follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
A big right from Sagan misses.
Pawter looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sagan is fending him off so far but Pawter persists. Nope, Sagan circles away and we're back to standing.

Pawter with a poor takedown
and Sagan counters with a straight punch to the midsection.

Pawter shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Sagan is trying to defend but Pawter finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Pawter is trying to control the action in half guard but Sagan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Pawter looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Pawter is trying to control the action in half guard but Sagan is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Pawter tries to pass the half guard into mount. Sagan knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Sagan blocking the ground and pound attempt from Pawter.
Pawter seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Pawter throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

Pawter seems to be working for a kimura but Sagan defends the submission attempt.
Pawter throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Pawter is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Sagan looks like he's trying to stand up.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Pawter working over Sagan with some ground and pound. Sagan looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Sagan desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Sagan looks like he's trying to stand up.

Pawter is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Pawter is trying to work for a kimura but Sagan is defending well.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Robert Pawter dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Pawter shoots in and drives through. Sagan sprawls well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sagan throws a leg kick which misses Pawter's front leg but catches the back leg as Pawter tries to avoid it.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pawter looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Pawter tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Sagan was well out of range. Poor timing from Pawter.
Sagan throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Pawter misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Sagan counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pawter keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Sagan looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Pawter fails with a takedown attempt.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sagan scores with a three punch combo!
Sagan connects with a body shot that sends Pawter's belly button to the back.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Sagan misses with a looping right.
Sagan misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Pawter counters with a nice uppercut.
Pawter will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Robert Pawter. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sagan misses with a wild body shot.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Carl Sagan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Pawter swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Pawter takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Good exchange - Sagan coming out on top.

Pawter shoots in and bounces Sagan off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Pawter slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Pawter looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Pawter wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sagan, who protects the arm well.
Pawter trying to control the action but Sagan is working from the bottom.
Sagan really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pawter. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Sagan managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Pawter.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Pawter is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Sagan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The strikes coming from Pawter are missing the target in this wave of attacks.

Pawter tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Pawter has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Pawter taking a break here but Sagan is having none of it and regains half guard.

Pawter stands up from half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Pawter gets cracked there but stands up to it.
The crowd cheers as Sagan lands an impressive looking overhand right. Pawter doesn't seem phased though.
Sagan ducks down and throws a hook to the body.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Pawter falls off balance throwing a combination
and Sagan counters with a stiff right hand.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Nice defenses there by Sagan.

And that's the end of the fight!
Robert Pawter showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Pawter has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
