PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Nick Vass (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Stu Grimson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Grimson is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Carcass-Corporeal Jigsore Quandary. Stu Grimson is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Nick Vass!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Stu Grimson!
The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Damien Edna and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Grimson throws out a loose jab but Vass uses good head movement to avoid it.

Vass has Grimson up against the cage in a clinch.
Grimson lands an uppercut.
Grimson prevents a takedown attempt there.
Vass wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.
Grimson misses with a short punch on the inside.
Vass blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning.
Grimson tries to land knees in the clinch but Vass avoids the damage to the body.
Grimson connects with a nasty looking knee right to Vass's face.
A right handed body shot lands from Grimson.
Grimson lands a short shot on the inside that snaps the head of Vass backwards.
Grimson prevents the takedown attempt.
Grimson wants to break free but Vass has control.
Vass takes a knee right on the jaw!
With the fighters up against the cage, Grimson throws an elbow but misses.
Vass tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage.
Vass fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Vass. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Grimson is pressed up against the cage. Vass has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Grimson down to the mat. Grimson avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Vass dives in and scores a takedown into Grimson's guard.
Vass is breathing heavily.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Grimson is on top in guard.
Grimson throwing strikes from guard but Vass blocks nicely.
Vass is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Grimson thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Grimson missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
Vass pulls Grimson in to control the position.
Grimson throwing strikes but missing.
Vass is pulling down on Grimson's head. It's preventing any offense from Grimson, at least for the moment.
Grimson tries to free his leg and advance position but Vass is retaining full guard.
Vass looking for a sweep. Not yet Vass, not yet.
Vass looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Nick Vass.
Grimson lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Vass takes one on the button.
Vass walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Grimson misses with an uppercut

and Vass counters with a takedown into side control.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Grimson is not content to let Vass control the position.
Grimson looking for a sweep but Vass has passed into full mount! Oh no!
Grimson is desperately trying to improve his position but Vass has a good base and remains in mount.

Vass moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Grimson has worked his arm free - good work by Grimson!
Grimson regains half guard.
Grimson wants to improve his position but Vass is controlling well.

Vass is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Grimson is just riding it out for now. Vass eventually gives up the hold.

Grimson works his way to full guard. Good work.
Vass sitting in guard here, content to control.
Grimson is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Grimson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vass keeps working.
Grimson wants to free his trapped foot but Vass is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Grimson is thwarting Vass's attempts to control the position.

Vass makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Vass.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Grimson throws a hook but Vass avoids it easily.
Horrible takedown by Vass or perhaps it was just good defense by Grimson which made him look bad.
Vass throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

Vass looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Grimson tries to roll over but Vass keeps him under control.
Grimson wants to control but Vass is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Vass seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Grimson does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Grimson lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Grimson fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Vass.
Grimson scores to the head and body with a nice combination!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

The fight stays on the outside here - Grimson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Grimson lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Vass displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Grimson throws out the jab.

Vass is looking to control Grimson's arms but Grimson gets an underhook and turns him. Now Vass has his back to the cage.
Grimson lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Vass or not.
Grimson unloads a knee to the mid-section. Vass lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Vass changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Grimson fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Vass throws a wild body kick that Grimson sees coming a mile off.
Grimson throws a series of punches but Vass avoids them all with ease.
Grimson looks to land a combination but Vass avoids it well.

Vass dives in and grabs Grimson's left leg, looking for a takedown. Grimson pushes down on Vass's head and hops out.
Grimson feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Vasss jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist!
Vass keeps the fight on the outside.
Grimson misses with a wild combination.
Grimson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Grimson scores with a jab. Vass acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Vass tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Vass looks for a takedown but Grimson sprawls well.
Grimson does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Grimson throws a leg kick but Vass sees it coming and moves out of range.
Vass fails with the takedown.
Grimson scores with a jab to the body.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Stu Grimson showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Grimson swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Grimson shoots in looking for a takedown. Vass tries to sprawl out of it but Grimson keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Vass manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Vass instigates a clinch.
Grimson tries a knee to the head but Vass blocks it.
Vass tries to pull guard but Grimson won't allow it.

Grimson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Vass tries to keep at a distance but Grimson has taken the fight into the clinch.
Vass is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Grimson crunches a lovely knee into Vass's ribcage.
Grimson lands a left hand.
Vass managing to block the knees to the body from Grimson.
Grimson misses with a knee to the head.
Vass jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Grimson walks away with a smile on his face. Vass gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Nick Vass. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Grimson circles away from the clinch attempt.
Grimson will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Nick Vass is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Vass shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Grimson manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Vass would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Grimson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Vass gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Vass is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Vass trying to control the position from guard on top but Grimson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Grimson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Vass defends well.

Vass wants to control from the top but Grimson keeps moving.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Grimson controls Vass momentarily but Vass frees himself.

Grimson gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Vass to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Grimson wants to sweep here but Vass controlling him for the moment.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Vass has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Grimson is proving hard to escape from.

Nick Vass overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

and Vass counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Grimson's guard now.
