The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, John Mangel and Eliza Hachem.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kotaro throws a leg kick that is checked
and McDonald counters with a straight right hand.
Kotaro drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
McDonald wants to control but Kotaro postures up.
Kotaro trying to control the position but McDonald is working away.
Kotaro is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, McDonald has escaped the position, nice work there.
McDonald is trying to get back to half guard.
Kotaro is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. McDonald knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kotaro wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McDonald, who protects the arm well.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kotaro thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Kotaro goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, McDonald has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Kotaro but great work by McDonald.

McDonald throws an elbow but Kotaro slips to the side and avoids it well.

Fuma Kotaro dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

McDonald pushes Kotaro back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

McDonald rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Kotaro moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

Both fighters circling a little - Kotaro finishes the exchange with a kick to the body.

and McDonald connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

McDonald tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Kotaro was well out of range. Poor timing from McDonald.

Maurice McDonald has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Fuma Kotaro.

and McDonald counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Kotaro decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Kotaro is stalling here. McDonald is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Kotaro seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and McDonald has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

McDonald is thwarting Kotaro's attempts to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

McDonald thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Kotaro's head.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Kotaro is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

McDonald slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

Kotaro bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in McDonald's guard.

Kotaro takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Kotaro feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kotaro wants to sweep here but McDonald controlling him for the moment.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Maurice McDonald.
I think McDonald has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
