PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Michael Shifflett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Abraham Lincoln (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Lincoln's choice of entrance music: Hail To The Chief. I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Michael Shifflett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Abraham Lincoln!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Reed Andrews and Steve Montenegro.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Shifflett gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Shifflett is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Lincoln looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Lincoln stops Shifflett from standing up.

Shifflett has his foot on Lincoln's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lincoln works his way back into a safe position though.
Shifflett can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Lincoln controls the pace.
Shifflett avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Shifflett is trying to keep Lincoln in close.

Lincoln is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Lincoln really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Shifflett. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Michael Shifflett.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Lincoln in particular looking to stall.
It looks like Lincoln might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Shifflett gets caught flat footed, as Lincoln shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Let's hope that Lincoln has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Lincoln looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into mount! Oh, that's bad for Shifflett!

Lincoln takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Lincoln's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Shifflett might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Abraham Lincoln hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Shifflett misses with a hook

and Shifflett takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Shifflett walks into a left hand.
Lincoln scores with a jab. Shifflett acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Shifflett closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Lincoln to the mat! Lincoln manages to get full guard.
Lincoln seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Shifflett postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Shifflett looking to sit in guard and control but Lincoln gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Lincoln makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

The referee asks Lincoln politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Lincoln prefers to stall for the moment though.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lincoln pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Abraham Lincoln showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

OK we're going to have a standup here. Abraham Lincoln hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Well Lincoln has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
