PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Marco Reyes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Steve Brooks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Reyes might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to How You Like Me Now? by The Heavy. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marco Reyes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Steve Brooks!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Reed Andrews and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Brooks tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Reyes manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Brooks gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Reyes to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Reyes is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Brooks wants to stand but Reyes is controlling the position.
Reyes postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Brooks is trying to control the position but Reyes postures up.
Brooks trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Reyes postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Brooks has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Brooks is pulling down on Reyes's head. It's preventing any offense from Reyes, at least for the moment.
Reyes throws a big right hand that misses.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Reyes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Reyes is in close to Brooks's body, working some short punches and elbows.
Brooks controls Reyes momentarily but Reyes frees himself.
Brooks wants to sweep but no luck.
Brooks has momentary wrist control but Reyes slips an elbow through the middle.

Reyes could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Reyes is looking to work some ground and pound but Brooks has wrist control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Reyes is looking to work some ground and pound but Brooks has wrist control.
Reyes has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Brooks has momentary wrist control but Reyes slips an elbow through the middle.
Brooks wants to sweep here but Reyes controlling him for the moment.

Reyes working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Brooks's head.
Brooks is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Reyes lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Reyes connects with a couple of short punches.
Brooks controls Reyes momentarily but Reyes frees himself.
Brooks is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Reyes postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Reyes distracts Brooks with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.
Reyes content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots.
Brooks is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Reyes is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Reyes wants to sweep here but Brooks controlling him for the moment.
Reyes has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Brooks drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Brooks jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Brooks is fighting to break Reyes's control of his arms but Reyes is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Reyes wants to sweep here but Brooks controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Brooks tries to clinch there but Reyes circles away.
Brooks lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.

Reyes shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Reyes showed some decent athleticism there.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Brooks holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Reyes drops an elbow to the side of Brooks's head.
Reyes is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Reyes trying to mount his opponent but Brooks defends it.
Brooks is breathing heavily.

Reyes not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Brooks regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Reyes.
Brooks throws a couple of weedy looking strikes off his back.
Brooks manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Reyes manages to get himself to full guard.
Reyes has control of Brooks's left arm, preventing Brooks from doing any damage.
Reyes trying to keep a closed guard but Brooks is proving a slippery customer.
Reyes wants to improve his position but instead Brooks has moved into half guard.

Reyes is trying is best to control the position here.
Reyes knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Brooks on the ground.
Reyes is refusing to be controlled, as Brooks sits in half guard.

It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Brooks is pressing down on Reyes's thigh, looking to free his foot. Reyes is holding on for now.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Brooks tries to clinch but Reyes moves away

and Reyes counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Reyes.
Reyes lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Brooks manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Reyes tries to hold on but Brooks pushes him away.
Reyes wants to improve position but instead he's given up his back.
Reyes avoids the strikes from Brooks.
Brooks gets his hands free as Reyes looks to control.
Brooks is throwing strikes from the back here. Oh that last one was to the back of the head. Brooks gets a warning from the referee. He throws another strike to the back of the head straight away though and the referee has seen enough. He breaks up the two fighters and stands them back up. Brooks gets a real talking to here and is lucky not to get a point deducted. Brooks apologises and we restart here on the feet.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Reyes might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Reyes lands a couple of digs.
Reyes cracks Brooks with a solid left hand.
Reyes stands up over Brooks, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Brooks is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Reyes defends well.

Brooks had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Reyes defends it easily.

Reyes throws and elbow that misses. Brooks uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Reyes's guard. Nice move by Brooks!
Reyes has Brooks pulled in close to control his posture.
Reyes keeping moving, preventing Brooks from controlling successfully.
Reyes on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Reyes tries to get out of the position.
Brooks trying to stand up but can't free himself from Reyes's guard.
Brooks stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Reyes swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Reyes lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Brooks!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

You get the feeling that Brooks really doesn't like being in this position too much.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Reyes cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Brooks sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Brooks is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Reyes scores with a couple of nice shots.
Reyes lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Brooks regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Reyes.

And that's the end of the fight!
Marco Reyes showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Reyes, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
