PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rol Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Denilson Pires (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Alec Ball and Yves DeLean.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pires feints and as Gracie raises his hands in defense, Pires changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
Pires with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
Gracie utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Pires stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Gracie looking to score a takedown here. Pires is defending well but Gracie drives through and ends up in Pires's guard.
Gracie will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Pires keeping full guard, as Gracie tries to pass.
Gracie trying to move into half guard but instead Pires has managed to sweep!
Pires is looking to work some ground and pound but Gracie has wrist control.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Gracie has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pires can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Gracie is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pires is aware though and is defending well.
Pires trying to control the position from guard on top but Gracie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Pires got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gracie has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pires has managed to get both his arms back between Gracie's legs - danger averted.

Pires throwing strikes but missing.
Pires makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Pires wants to pass the guard but Gracie is keeping the position.
Pires looks gassed!
Pires working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Gracie's head.
Pires trying to control the position from guard on top but Gracie is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Gracie manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Pires manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Gracie works a leg free and moves into half guard.

Pires tries to roll over but Gracie keeps him under control.

Gracie is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Gracie wants to work for an arm triangle but Pires is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Gracie looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Pires looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

Gracie pushes down on Pires's leg and manages to get into half guard.

Gracie maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Pires could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Gracie has cracked it and Pires is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Gracie!
