Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Bobby Sparks (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jozo Martini (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sparks's entrance music is Viva Las Vegas by Dead Kennedys. A fine choice. Jozo Martini is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Bobby Sparks!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Jozo Martini!
The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Steve Smith and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sparks misses with a hook
and Martini counters with a stiff right hand.


It looks like Bobby Sparks has been cut.
Sparks wants to clinch
enabling Martini to counter with a crisp jab.
Sparks doesn't manage to clinch there - Martini circles away.
Sparks throws a hook but Martini blocks it.
Bobby Sparks seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Martini slips under a jab.
Good leg kick by Sparks there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Martini gets caught flat footed, as Sparks shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Martini avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Sparks has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sparks is fighting to break Martini's control of his arms but Martini is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Sparks accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Bobby Sparks.

Sparks is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Martini's half guard.

Martini has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Sparks is working away from the top position though.

Sparks slips a nice elbow through Martini's hands, connecting with Martini's forehead.

Martini wants to improve his position but Sparks is controlling well.
Sparks is pressing down on Martini's thigh, looking to free his foot. Martini is holding on for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sparks looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Martini with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

and Martini counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Sparks shoots and misses
and Martini counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Martini pulls Sparks in to control the position.
Martini is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Bobby Sparks overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Sparks throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Martini works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Martini wants to sweep but no luck.

Sparks stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martini swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sparks chips away with some ground and pound.
Sparks stops Martini from standing up.
Sparks pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Martini is keeping the position for now.
Martini looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Sparks wants to control from the top but Martini keeps moving.
Sparks trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Martini really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sparks. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Sparks is working Martini over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.

Martini utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Sparks wants to control from the top but Martini keeps moving.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sparks is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Martini is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Sparks looking to sit in guard and control but Martini gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Martini is looking to stand up but Sparks won't let him.

Sparks feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Sparks postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Sparks stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Martini swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Sparks loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Sparks misses with a takedown
and Martini counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Sparks throws a right hand that misses
and Martini counters with a nice uppercut.
Martini keeps the fight on the outside.
Sparks will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Sparks fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bobby Sparks. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Martini counters with a straight right hand.

and Martini cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Martini gets tackled into the cage by Sparks. Sparks maintains the clinch.
Martini has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Sparks is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Sparks lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Sparks is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Martini is trying to drag Sparks to the mat but Sparks just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Martini tries for a takedown but Sparks manages to get underhooks.

Martini tries to break free but Sparks pushes him back against the cage.
Martini can't get the takedown.

Sparks is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Martini can't fight it off and eventually Sparks manages to take the fight to the floor. Martini looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Sparks tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Martini manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Bobby Sparks is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Martini takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Sparks throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Martini tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Sparks is in Martini's guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Bobby Sparks.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sparks, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
