PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matt Pearce (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Veneda S (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Matt Pearce!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Veneda S!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Stewart Dunkirk and Alan Glass.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
S feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Pearce's calf.
S throws an ugly left hook that misses

and Pearce counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Pearce is pushing S up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.
S can't break the clinch.

S pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Pearce takes a nice looking leg kick right on the meat of his thigh there.
S pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Pearce back to the cage. S follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Pearce shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
S tries to get to full guard but Pearce has control of the leg.

S is defending against the submission attempts here by Pearce.

S is trying to get back to full guard.
S is trying to maintain the position but Pearce is very close to passing his half guard.

Pearce is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and S defends it well.
S punching from the bottom.
S wants to improve his position but Pearce is controlling well.
S makes his way to full guard. A much better position for S.

Pearce got a little sloppy there for a moment and S has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Pearce has managed to get both his arms back between S's legs - danger averted.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
S is trying to control the position but Pearce postures up.
S utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

S wants to sweep here but Pearce controlling him for the moment.

Pearce might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Pearce makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

S escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pearce gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

S had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pearce defends it easily.

S is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Pearce defends well.

S keeps the fight on the outside.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

S lands with a thumping leg kick.
Pearce dodges the punch combination from S.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
S throws a right and a left that both miss.
S swats away the attempt to clinch by Pearce.
S throws a quick inside leg kick.
Pearce takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.

Pearce tries to clinch but S is having none of it.
S rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Pearce moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
S connects with a nice looking jab.
Veneda S seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pearce takes one to the side of the head.

and S makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Pearce tries to close the distance and clinch but S swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Pearce rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and S counters with a nice uppercut.
Pearce on the wrong end of a nice hook.
S is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
S fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Pearce has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Matt Pearce is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pearce moves in looking to clinch but S pushes him off.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Pearce shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts S as he jumps to the side.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Veneda S showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


S darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Pearce shoots for a takedown but S saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
S throws a combination that misses

and Pearce counters with a single leg into guard. S didn't expect that.

S manages to escape and get back to his feet.
S throws a front kick aimed at Pearce's knee but Pearce avoids it well.

Pearce moves into the clinch successfully.

S being controlled against the cage.

S escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
S clobbers Pearce with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
S feints and then cracks Pearce's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Pearce down.
S fakes a head shot and lands one to the body.
Pearce tries to clinch
and S counters with a straight right hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from S. No joy for Pearce on that attempt.
S shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Pearce eats them both and turns towards S to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Pearce scores with a crisp jab that stopped S in his tracks.
Pearce closes this distance looking for a takedown but S circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Matt Pearce. That's going to take a lot out of him.
S lands with a kick to the temple. Pearce shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"


It looks like Matt Pearce has been cut.
Pearce takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Good leg kick by S there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Pearce shoots in looking for a takedown. S tries to sprawl out of it but Pearce keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. S manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
S has used his reach advantage pretty well so far tonight.
S stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and S wants it to stay on the feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Pearce closes the distance looking to clinch
and S counters with a stiff right hand.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Pearce takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Pearce shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
S is pressing down on Pearce's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Veneda S.
I think S has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
