PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Alex Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cristiano Fereira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alex Mason!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Cristiano Fereira!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Timothy Bukovac and .




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Fereira has his takedown stuffed

and Mason counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Fereira looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!
Fereira keeping moving, preventing Mason from controlling successfully.
Mason won't allow Fereira to sweep him here.
Mason trying to control but Fereira is working from the bottom.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Alex Mason.
Donk. Mason catches Fereira right on the button with a cross.
Fereira doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Mason counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.

Mason breaks the clinch.
Fereira avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Mason shoots in looking for a takedown. Fereira tries to sprawl out of it but Mason keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Fereira manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Mason moves into the clinch.

Mason successfully pulls guard.
Fereira trying to control the position from guard on top but Mason is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Mason trying to keep a closed guard but Fereira is proving a slippery customer.
Mason has Fereira pulled in close to control his posture.
Mason manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

Mason is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet!
Mason tries to clinch but Fereira moves out of range.

Mason shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Mason showed some decent athleticism there.
Mason thows a huge punch but Fereira dodges it nicely.
Mason uses his free foot to push down on Fereira's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Fereira.

Mason punching from mount but Fereira doing a good job of avoiding damage.
Fereira is squirming around, avoiding Mason's attempts to control the action.
Mason thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Fereira really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mason. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mason trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Mason controlling from the full mount.
Mason tries to control but Fereira wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Mason dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mason shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Fereira as he jumps to the side.
Mason misses with a shot to the body

and Fereira counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Mason's guard now.
Mason pulls Fereira in to control the position.
Fereira stopping the sweep attempt from Mason.
Mason wants to get back to his feet but Fereira is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mason trying to keep a closed guard but Fereira is proving a slippery customer.
Fereira must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Fereira is breathing heavily.

Alex Mason has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mason looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Mason shoots in and gets a takedown into Fereira's guard.

Mason thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Mason would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Mason is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Mason slips nicely into half guard.

Mason decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Fereira misses with a takedown

and Mason counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Mason content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mason is trying to control. Fereira wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mason missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Mason wants to take a breather but Fereira is having none of it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Alex Mason.
Fereira is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Mason shoots in looking for a takedown. Fereira tries to sprawl out of it but Mason keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Fereira manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Mason feints and as Fereira raises his hands in defense, Mason changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Mason wanted to stand there but Fereira had control of the position.
Mason trying to control but Fereira is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Alex Mason dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!


Mason shoots in and drives through. Fereira sprawls well.
Mason throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Fereira's waist but Fereira gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Mason off to one side.
Fereira slaps away a takedown attempt from Mason, before circling back to the center of the mat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Alex Mason. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Mason shoots in for a takedown but Fereira shows good takedown defense.
Fereira is trying hard to land a takedown here. Mason sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Mason closes the distance and clinches.

Mason jumps guard.
Mason is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Fereira throws a strike but Mason rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mason slips nicely into half guard.
Fereira takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Mason keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Mason wants to stand up but Fereira has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Fereira wants to control but Mason is keeping busy and won't allow it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Mason decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.

Mason gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Mason changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Fereira fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Fereira keeping moving, preventing Mason from controlling successfully.
Mason looking to sit in guard and control but Fereira gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Mason has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Fereira should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Mason has tightened it up now! Fereira should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
