PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick Gap (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dew Rain (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Patrick Gap!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dew Rain!
The judges for this bout are John Kavanagh, David Schapiro and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rain closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Gap quickly recovers to half guard.
Rain working Gap over with strikes.
Gap is trying to maintain the position but Rain is very close to passing his half guard.
Rain is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Gap is bucking up trying to escape but Rain cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Rain avoids the attempt from Gap to control.
Gap is wriggling around trying to escape.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Gap wants to hold on but Rain pushes him away.

Rain is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Gap is surviving well by controlling Rain's body position as best he can.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Rain cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Rain manages to capitalize on a mistake by Gap to take his back!

Rain working for the choke.

Rain is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. Gap knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften Gap for a finish.

Rain connects with a series of strikes and the referee is calling for Gap to escape the position.
Rain doesn't have the hooks in and Gap manages to turn into his guard.
Gap wants to stand but Rain has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Gap has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Gap trying to control the position from guard on top but Rain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Rain looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Gap thows a big elbow that misses.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Rain trying to keep a closed guard but Gap is proving a slippery customer.

Gap avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Rain working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Gap has passed into half guard!
Rain has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Rain on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.
Rain trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!

Rain wants to control but Gap is having none of it.
Gap working the ground and pound effectively.
Rain wants to hold on but Gap pushes him away.
Gap pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
Rain tries to reverse the position but Gap maintains control.
Gap punishing his opponent with strikes.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Rain is looking to improve his position but Gap isn't that keen on the idea.
Gap raining down hammerfists from mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gap lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
Gap prevents Rain from getting the reversal.
Gap tries to control but Rain wriggling away.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gap is really struggling to control Rain but he's trying to hold on to the position.
Rain swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Rain is desperately trying to improve his position but Gap has a good base and remains in mount.
Rain wants to control but Gap is having none of it.
Gap controlling the pace for now.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Gap working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Gap trying to control but Rain is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Dew Rain will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Rain shoots in for a takedown but Gap shows good takedown defense.
Rain shoots in looking for a takedown but Gap manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Rain's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Gap shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rain napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Rain is not content to let Gap control the position.
Gap working away.

Gap decides to stand up, so the ref orders Rain to his feet.
Gap moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Gap is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Rain has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Gap can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Rain can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Gap controls the pace.

Rain escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Gap gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Gap tries to free his leg and advance position but Rain is retaining full guard.

Rain is working an open guard so Gap takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

Gap feints and as Rain raises his hands in defense, Gap changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Rain looking for a guillotine here but Gap defends easily.

Rain working for a triangle but Gap defends it easily.
Rain is breathing heavily.

Gap tries to stand but Rain is controlling from the bottom.

Rain is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Gap stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rain swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Rain has his foot on Gap's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gap works his way back into a safe position though.

Rain had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Gap defends it easily.

Gap stands up and waves to Rain to follow him.
Gap misses with a two punch combination.

Oooooh!!! Gap has knocked Rain down with a huge combo! Gap steps away and waves a wobbly Rain back to his feet! This one might not go much longer!


It looks like Dew Rain has been cut.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Jab, jab by Gap - just one landing.

Gap looking for a takedown here - he's got it.


Rain is rocked!

Rain throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Gap escapes and throws Rain's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Rain is still in real trouble! Can Gap finish him?
Rain is trying to escape the position but Gap is controlling the position.
Rain seems to have recovered his senses.

Gap tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Rain gets back to half guard.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Gap is trying to control. Rain wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Patrick Gap dominated that second round.
The cut man is working on Dew Rain's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Rain slips a jab and a cross from Gap.
Dew Rain seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Gap displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.
No luck for Rain with that takedown attempt.

Gap closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Rain to the mat! Rain manages to get full guard.
Rain looking to hit a scissor sweep but Gap is one step ahead there.

Gap decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Rain, up you get!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Gap throws a head kick but Rain moves out of range.
Patrick Gap is winning the standup battle so far.
Gap tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A looping hook to the body misses from Rain. Gap does a little dance to reset his feet.
Gap tries to clinch there but Rain circles away.
Rain looks for a takedown but Gap sprawls well.

Gap gets a takedown into half guard.
Rain takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Rain wants to improve his position but Gap is controlling well.

Rain looking for submissions off his back.
Gap working over Rain with some ground and pound. Rain looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Gap wants to control but Rain is keeping him busy.
Gap winds up and cracks Rain with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
The fighters are battling for position here. Rain manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Gap seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

We're going to have a standup here because Patrick Gap wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Rain shoots in but Gap avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Patrick Gap has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dew Rain.
Rain shoots in for a takedown but Gap shows good takedown defense.
Gap misses with a body shot.

Gap fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Rain to the ground. Gap is now in Rain's guard.

Rain is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Gap is aware though and is defending well.

Gap is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

This has been an exciting period of action!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well Gap has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
