PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Tim Johns (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Duk Dong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Johns comes into the arena with Cocaine Blues blaring out of the sound system. Dong has chosen Thompson Twins - If You Were Here as his entrance music. Duk Dong has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 1, fighting out of New York, Tim Johns!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Duk Dong!
The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Eddie Farnsworth and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johns throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Johns has Dong up against the cage in a clinch.
Johns drops down looking for an ankle pick but Dong pulls his leg out and moves away.
A chopping leg kick lands by Johns.
Johns lets loose with a powerful body kick. Dong will feel that in the morning.
Dong fails with the takedown
and Johns cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Johns rushes Dong and presses him up against the cage.
Johns lands a nice uppercut.
A nice left hand lands by Johns.
Johns is looking to break free of the clinch but Dong has double underhooks.
A short left from Johns.
Johns lands a body shot.

Johns breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Johns falls off balance throwing a combination

and Dong counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johns won't be happy with that.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johns is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Dong trying to control the position but Johns is working away.
Dong scores with punches from side control.
Dong is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Johns sneaks out the side door and pushes Dong away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape.
Johns throws a body punch but Dong moves out of range.
Johns throws a predictable looking body shot

and Dong counters with a shoot takedown. Johns fights it but they end up in guard.
Dong wants to stand but Johns has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Dong is looking to work some ground and pound but Johns has wrist control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johns is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Johns utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Dong postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.

Johns escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Dong gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Dong is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Dong is pushing down on Johns's leg trying to pass to half guard. Johns is fighting to maintain full guard but Dong has managed to sneak the leg through.

Dong is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Johns is just riding it out for now. Dong eventually gives up the hold.
Johns is looking for a sweep. Dong is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Dong with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Dong prevents Johns from improving his position.

Johns trying to control here.
Johns wants to improve his position but Dong is controlling well.

Johns looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Johns is breathing heavily.
Dong lands with a punch from half guard.
Johns tries to roll over but Dong keeps him under control.
Dong is looking to take a break and control but Johns is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Johns has hold of Dong's hands but Dong slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Johns looking for submissions off his back.

Dong decides to stand up.
Johns misses with a wild combination.
Johns throws a body punch but Dong moves out of range.
Dong has his takedown stuffed

and Johns counters with a single leg into guard. Dong didn't expect that.
Johns trying to control but Dong is working from the bottom.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Tim Johns will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Dong has his takedown stuffed

and Johns counters with a shoot takedown. Dong fights it but they end up in guard.
Johns trying to control the position from guard on top but Dong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Johns drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Dong manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Johns has Dong in his guard.
Johns is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Dong drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Dong jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Johns will have to put a bit more behind his punches if he's going to do any damage from this position.
Duk Dong has got the better of the ground game so far.
Dong stopping the sweep attempt from Johns.
Johns bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Dong's guard.

Johns passes into half guard.

Johns seems to be looking for submissions.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Dong is trying to control but can't.

Johns seems to be working for a kimura but Dong defends the submission attempt.
Johns sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Dong defending well though.
Johns wants to control but Dong is keeping him busy.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Dong has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johns is working away from the top position though.
Dong wants to improve his position but Johns is controlling well.
Johns passes the guard and advances to mount!
Dong is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Dong is trying desperately to improve position.
Johns is landing with some decent strikes but Dong is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Johns throws some wild stikes that Dong manages to avoid easily.

Johns jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Dong is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Dong and Johns has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Johns tries to move to mount but Dong blocks the move with his legs.
Dong is looking to regain half guard here but Johns keeps moving and retains side control.
Johns is looking to take a break and control but Dong is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Johns landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Johns trying to control the action but Dong is working from the bottom.
The strikes coming from Johns are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
Johns scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Dong to see if he's OK.
An elbow from Johns crashes against the mat.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Johns fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Dong manages to avoid it.
Johns circles away from the clinch attempt.
Tim Johns is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Johns closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Dong quickly recovers to half guard.
Johns thows a huge punch but Dong dodges it nicely.
Johns stalling away here and it's allowed Dong to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard.
Johns has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Johns is looking to advance position but Dong has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Johns tries to lock up and control but Dong gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Dong tries to control but Johns wriggling away.

Dong has control of Johns's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Johns regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Dong scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Johns?
Johns regains half guard.

Dong is looking for a kimura but Johns is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Dong to get the leverage.

Dong is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

Dong is working for a submission of some sort.
Johns is trying to stand.

Johns is looking to improve his position.
Dong seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Johns does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Dong is thwarting Johns's attempts to control the position.
Dong moves into full mount! Johns won't be happy about that!
Johns tries to reverse the position but Dong maintains control.
Johns is working hard here to advance position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Dong lands a big shot there that rocks Johns but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Duk Dong has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Johns is looking to improve his position but Dong isn't that keen on the idea.

Dong has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Johns's face.
