PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Giles (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Yeung Sze (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, John Giles!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yeung Sze!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yuuki Gou.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Giles throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sze's waist but Sze gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Giles off to one side.
Sze swinging wildly here.
Sze throws a low kick but it's checked well by Giles.
Sze tries to land a front kick but Giles steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Sze stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sze wants it to stay on the feet.
Giles throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.


It looks like Yeung Sze has been cut.
Yeung Sze seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sze shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Giles eats them both and turns towards Sze to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Giles takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Sze throws a series of strikes that have Giles backpedaling.
Giles changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Sze tries to avoid it but Giles manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Sze to the ground. Sze escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Giles. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Sze keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Giles tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Sze swivels and escapes.
Yeung Sze is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Giles looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Sze is fending him off so far but Giles persists. Nope, Sze circles away and we're back to standing.
Giles on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Giles ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Sze moves away.

Giles shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Sze defends it nicely.

Sze keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

Sze throws a head kick but Giles moves out of range.
Giles closes the distance and clinches up with Sze, looking for a takedown. Giles pushes Sze against the ropes but Sze circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Sze throws a body punch but Giles moves out of range.
Giles fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Sze lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.
Sze lands a nice shot to the body.
Giles takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Sze misses with a double jab.
Sze throws a sloppy head kick and Giles moves out of range easily.

Giles is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Sze.
Giles is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Jab, jab by Giles - just one landing.
Sze lands a head kick. Giles smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Nice takedown defense from Sze. No joy for Giles on that attempt.

Sze fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Sze keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Giles.
Giles's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Sze connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Giles scrambles back to his feet.

Sze lands a nice hook to Giles's body. Giles takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes.
Giles tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Sze was well out of range. Poor timing from Giles.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!
Giles throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Sloppy strikes from Giles. Those never looked like landing.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sze thows a leg kick but Giles checks it
and Giles counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.

Giles misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Sze clobbers Giles with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
John Giles is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Giles blocks the body kick.
Sze displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Giles.
Giles avoids the head kick by Sze.
Giles shoots in but Sze avoids the takedown attempt easily.

This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Giles. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.
Sze throws a head kick that misses.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Sze counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

No joy there for Sze, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Giles drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Giles is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sze knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Giles throws a strike aimed at the side of Sze's head but Sze avoids it well.
Giles sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Sze is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.

Giles working the strikes but Sze uses the opportunity to regain half guard.
Giles thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Giles seems to be looking for submissions.
Sze pushes Giles off looking to stand but Giles dives back in and keeps control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that John Giles will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Yeung Sze's cut.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Giles shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sze as he avoids it easily.

Sze plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!

Sze tries to sprawl but Giles drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Giles thows a huge punch but Sze dodges it nicely.

Giles is taking a breather. Sze says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Sze wants to get back to his feet.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Sze is trying to stand.
Giles scores with a couple of good hammerfists.
Giles trying to control from half guard but Sze is working away.

Giles is working for a kimura from half guard. He's really concentrating on the hold and it's allowed Sze to slip a leg under and get back to full guard.
Giles wants to control from the top but Sze keeps moving.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Giles accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Giles trying to control the position from guard on top but Sze is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Giles postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Giles working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Giles pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sze is keeping the position for now.
Giles seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Giles's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of John Giles.
Sze throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Sze connects with an inside leg kick.
Sze throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Giles blocks a head kick by Sze.
Sze throws a head kick but Giles moves out of range.
Sze is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Sze takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Giles shoots in and gets a takedown into Sze's guard.

Giles throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sze works some decent striking defense from the bottom.

Giles postures up in Sze's guard and throws a big left but Sze blocks it.

Sze can't keep his opponent in guard - Giles advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sze tries to kick Giles off but Giles keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
John Giles showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Giles has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
