PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ping Pong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sub Position (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pong's entrance music is enae Volare Mezzo. A fine choice. Ping Pong has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ping Pong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sub Position!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Yukihiro Yamamoto.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Position shoots in looking for a takedown. Pong tries to sprawl out of it but Position keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Pong manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Position throws a right and a left that both miss.

Pong dives in and scores a takedown into Position's guard.
Pong trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Pong trying to control but Position is working from the bottom.
Pong won't allow Position to sweep him here.
Position is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Position is controlling Pong's posture.

We're going to have a standup here because Ping Pong wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

Position shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Pong napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Position working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Pong manages to work his way to half guard, despite Position's best efforts.
Position is just content to waste time from the top position. Pong takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Position has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Pong is proving hard to escape from.
Pong is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Position slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Pong is trying to control Position's posture but Position avoids it.
Pong pushes Position away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Position gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Position has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Pong!
Pong is looking to get to half guard.

Position is standing up, even though he is in mount.

Position gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Pong to score an easy takedown into full guard.

Position is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Pong is pressing down on Position's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Positionis looking to pass into half guard but Pong pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Pong is in guard.

Position is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pong is aware though and is defending well.

Position has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Pong can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Position is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Pong is aware though and is defending well.

Position is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Pong controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pong tries to free his leg and advance position but Position is retaining full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pong seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Pong advances to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Sub Position will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Position will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.

Position manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Pong on his heels. He'll look to pass Pong's guard now, I'm sure.

Pong working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Position doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Position manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Position passes into half guard.
Position seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pong does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Position might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Pong kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Position has decided to stand back up but his arm is trapped. Whilst he's worrying about his arm, Pong works to full guard.

Pong not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Position wants to pass the guard but Pong is keeping the position.

Position decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Position dives in and grabs Pong's left leg, looking for a takedown. Pong pushes down on Position's head and hops out.

Position tries to roll over but Pong keeps him under control.
Position is breathing heavily.
Pong is pressing down on Position's thigh, looking to free his foot. Position is holding on for now.

Pong is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Position defends it well.

Position moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Pong is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Position is just riding it out for now. Pong eventually gives up the hold.

Sub Position showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Pong's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!



Pong throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Position tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Pong is in Position's guard.

Position is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Pong can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Position stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Position takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Position had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Pong defends it easily.

Pong has gone for a leg lock! Position slips out almost immediately though and dives into Pong's guard.

Position stands and steps away. Pong gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Sub Position is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Pong clinches up with Position and pushes him back against the cage.
Position fails to pull guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Position jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Pong walks away with a smile on his face. Position gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Position shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Position was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Ping Pong.
I think Position has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
