PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Kelvin Stewart (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hito Nakamura (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Kelvin Stewart!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Hito Nakamura!
The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Summer Carpenter and Damien Edna.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Nakamura drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Stewart wants to get back to his feet but Nakamura is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Stewart keeping moving, preventing Nakamura from controlling successfully.
Nakamura won't allow Stewart to get back to his feet.
Nakamura stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Stewart swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Nakamura stands up over Stewart, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head.
Nakamura trying to control the position from guard on top but Stewart is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Stewart pushes Nakamura off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

Nakamura moves into range and clinches up with Stewart.
Nakamura is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Stewart pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Stewart breaks from the clinch.

Stewart darts in and clinches Nakamura up against the cage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Nakamura is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Nakamura wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Stewart has him pressed against the cage.

Stewart lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Stewart wants to get back to his feet.
Nakamura is looking for a sweep. Stewart is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Stewart tries to stand but can't do so whilst Nakamura controls his leg.

Stewart stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Nakamura is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Stewart scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Nakamura fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Stewart, pushing him back against the cage.

Stewart pulls guard.
Nakamura looking to sit in guard and control but Stewart gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Nakamura bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Stewart's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Stewart is breathing heavily.
Stewart is looking to stand up but Nakamura isn't so interested in that idea.

Stewart is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Nakamura breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nakamura blocks the body kick.
Stewart closes the distance but Nakamura moves to the side

and Nakamura counters by clinching up.

Nakamura breaks from the clinch.
Kelvin Stewart seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Stewart moves into the clinch.
Nakamura dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Nakamura wants to break free but Stewart has control.
Stewart tries to pull guard but Nakamura holds him up against the cage and eventually Stewart drops back down to his feet.
Stewart prevents the takedown attempt.

Nakamura's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Stewart moves into the clinch.
Nakamura is trying to break free.

Stewart tightens his grip and picks Nakamura up, before dumping him to the ground. Nakamura manages to land in guard.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Stewart gets to his feet. Nakamura looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Stewart misses with a kick to the body.
Stewart swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

and Nakamura moves into the clinch.
Stewart jumps guard but Nakamura stands there with Stewart around his waist. Stewart gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Stewart goes for a takedown attempt but Nakamura pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kelvin Stewart. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Nakamura moves in looking to clinch but Stewart pushes him off.
Nakamura tries a head kick but it misses.
Stewart leaves Nakamura with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Stewart takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Nakamura wants to clinch up but Stewart keeps it at a distance.
Stewart is looking to clinch.
Nakamura closes this distance looking for a takedown but Stewart circles away.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Nakamura shoots for a takedown but Stewart saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Nakamura tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Stewart paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Stewart plants his feet and lands a nice head kick!
Nakamura takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Stewart is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Kelvin Stewart dominated that round.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Stewart misses with a combination

and Nakamura counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Nakamura.

Nakamura is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Stewart can't fight it off and eventually Nakamura manages to take the fight to the floor. Stewart looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Nakamura trying to control but Stewart is working from the bottom.

Stewart pushes Nakamura off and scrambles back to his feet.
Nakamura darts in and out, connecting with a jab.
Stewart wants to clinch up but Nakamura keeps it at a distance.
Stewart throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Stewart tries to close the distance and clinch up but Nakamura swats him away and circles back towards the center.
No joy there for Stewart, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Nakamura shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away.
You get the feeling that Stewart really doesn't like being in this position too much.
Nakamura really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Stewart. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Nakamura tries to control but Stewart wriggling away.
Nakamura throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Stewart is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.

Stewart somehow manages to escape the mount and get back to his feet!
Nakamura looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Nakamura shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Stewart sprawls well. Stewart wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Nakamura gets slowly back to his feet.
Stewart lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Stewart throws a front kick aimed at Nakamura's knee but Nakamura avoids it well.
Nakamura shoots for a takedown but Stewart saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Kelvin Stewart has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Hito Nakamura.
Stewart moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Stewart fails with an attempt to clinch.
Stewart swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Nakamura scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Nakamura stops Stewart from getting back to his feet.
Nakamura working over Stewart with some ground and pound. Stewart looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Stewart might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Nakamura decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
The fight stays on the outside here - Nakamura looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Kelvin Stewart is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Stewart moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Nakamura tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Nakamura keeps the fight on the outside.
Stewart misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Stewart tries to clinch up but Nakamura circles away and keeps his distance.
Stewart throws a nice looking combination but Nakamura bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.

Nice sprawl there from Stewart as Nakamura shoots in.
Nakamura shoots in for a takedown but Stewart shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Nakamura shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Stewart defends it nicely.
Nice takedown defense from Stewart. No joy for Nakamura on that attempt.
Stewart wants to clinch up but Nakamura keeps it at a distance.
Stewart is looking to clinch.
Stewart misses with a right hand
and Nakamura counters with a lovely shot to the body.

Nakamura clinches up against the cage.
Nakamura tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Stewart smiles and moves away.
Stewart throws a head kick but Nakamura moves out of range.
Stewart tries to clinch there but Nakamura circles away.

Nakamura scores a takedown into full mount!

Stewart is trying to get back to his feet but can't.
Stewart trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
Nakamura tries to control but Stewart wriggling away.
Nakamura throws some wild stikes that Stewart manages to avoid easily.
Stewart trying desperately to get to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Hito Nakamura showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Back to the action! This is the final round!



Nakamura gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Stewart being controlled against the cage.
Stewart has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Nakamura is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.
Stewart is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
Stewart is working for takedown but Nakamura is calmly controlling the position for now.
Stewart stops a takedown attempt from Nakamura.
Nakamura throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Stewart blocks it with crossed arms.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nakamura ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Nakamura no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Stewart wants to stand but Nakamura has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Nakamura trying to keep a closed guard but Stewart is proving a slippery customer.
Stewart is looking to stand up but Nakamura won't let him.

Nakamura pushes Stewart off and gets back to his feet.
Nakamura misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Kelvin Stewart is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Nakamura tries to clinch but Stewart moves out of range.
Stewart delivers a nice body kick.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Stewart clinches up with Nakamura and pushes him back against the cage.

Nakamura pulls Stewart into guard.
Stewart postures up.

Stewart gets to his feet. Nakamura looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!

Stewart moves into the clinch.

Nakamura gets control of Stewart's arms and successfully pulls guard. Nakamura will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

Stewart stands up from Nakamura's guard - Stewart perhaps looking for a knockout.
Stewart closes the distance looking to clinch

and Nakamura counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Stewart!
Nakamura won't let Stewart get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Nakamura looking for a guillotine from mount but Stewart is having none of it.
Stewart is trying to get to the cage to help him get back to his feet.
Stewart tries to buck Nakamura off but Nakamura takes his back!
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Nakamura's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Nakamura lands a punch to the side of the head from the back.
Stewart covers up after that shot from Nakamura.
Stewart is trying to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Stewart covering up well and avoiding damage.
Nakamura is looking to control Stewart but Stewart is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Hito Nakamura has got the better of the ground game so far.
Stewart is trying to stand back up.

Stewart preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Nakamura.
Stewart prevents Nakamura from getting a body triangle.

And that's the end of the fight!
Hito Nakamura comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nakamura has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
